| Post subject: | Who has a light mini? |
After years of thinking about how best to do it I was just wondering if anyone has actually built a light weight mini for street use 
What did you do, would you change anything, is it too light or dose it still need to loose some kilos and most importantly what dose it weigh

Our racer only weighs 520 kg but is definitely not registerable. [actually could probably re-register online in SA no questions asked even being 6 years unregistered...no SA roadworthy required.] F/G boot /bonnet /single skin doors[or c/f ]...or a flip front. light weight seats...standard seating "weighs a tonne" Plastic headlight bowls..etc.... it all adds up. |

My old car used to be.... it's a pretty long list of what you can do on the road. All those things above, plus drilled out pedal box, rear subframe, lathed down rear drums, fibre bumpers, no rear seat or cards......the list is endless with imagination! One of the biggest single savings is the rear glass (ie fit lexan), but can get tricky depending on your local rules. |

Easiest way is to actively make the car less comfortable. Take out all the interior, lining and sound proofing and you're half way there. |

My Targa Tassie rally mini weighs 590kgs (empty)... & that`s very light for a road registered mini it really is difficult to get any/much lower than that & still keep it legal EDIT-->((( In Qld, Australia))) However,,, when you consider we had 13" wheels/tyres ((( EDIT--> 13" performance superlite wheels are one of the heavy-est mini wheels in the history of the automobile))) & a full international spec multi-point roll cage in there too,,, then we could make it quite a bit lighter again , possibly around 80kgs But!!!---> it "Obviously" wouldn`t be as strong without the roll cage EDIT--> this is a road car with all road-legal equipment on board inc heater , sunvisors, appolstery, & all metal panels... etc etc etc A totally gutted race mini can obviously go far-far lighter than a road mini |

I'm working on that last one 
Unofficial weigh in of the race car yesterday was 300kg at the front + 140kg at the back = 440kg That's with a full roll cage and 13x10" slicks on the front. Custom subframes, suspension, lots of fibreglass and plastic, and the Suzuki motor is all alloy. Have a look at Paul Wiginton over on Turbominis. His car is road legal, has a full interior, looks beautifully original and is well under 470kg (it was down to that in 2006). |

My Car is 572kgs half cage , alloy doors , perspex , one coat of paint ( no primer either ) still has all seats and door trims if you want a light car start with a bare shell and build it up from there ,if you can make everything in the car 30% lighter then the whole thing will weigh 30%less Beanie |

There are builds on tmf where the roof is replaced with cf. Or you could get ahold of a minus. Not legal (here anyway) the main issue with any modification, especially with body panels (at pedestrian impact zones) is that either an engineer has to certify it, or you have to submit it to crash testing for a compliance plate. Or something like that :p At cost of course. |

Yeah well I'm already lightweight, if I have had a massive meal, no toilet breaks, eight layers of clothing and was having a fat day on top of that even then I'd have trouble hitting 60kgs
