Post subject:  Immobiliser and alarm
Hey everyone..

Can anyone recommend a certain type/brand? How much will I be looking at for these? Also I know most car alarms go off when the door is opened (after the damage has already been done to get it open), but some alarms go off when the car is bumped, or the door handles are lifted without disabling it first (i believe).. Is it possible to get these?

I'm about to get a mini (I'm so excited, I'm about to crap my pants) and I've found out info on insurance.. they told me they won't insure it without these, so I've gotta get it done asap.

Answering my own question here I guess.. but I just found this

Those prices are all approx. I guess it depends on the car type... Does anyone know if you're allowed to fit a car alarm and immobiliser yourself? Or does it have to be done by a certified person blah blah blah?

`Immobilisers' are of various types- Shannons were quite happy for mine to just have ignition & fuel cutouts and a steering wheel lock.

Alarm? Waste of time, IMO.. nobody pays attention- my last one kept going off while driving- it didn't like vibration, haha. :lol:

Too true, the only things alarms do is piss poeple off, they're just as happy for the car to be stolen as long as it shuts the damn alarm off :lol: Seriously I've seen more than one car drive out of a carpark with the alarm wailing and noone gave it a second glance. Immobilisers and steering locks are the best form of security, and unless it's really bling a mini is fairly low down on a car thiefs list.

I'm not very concerned about the car getting stollen.. That's easy enough to prevent, also as you say minis aren't on the top of their list (excels are hahaha).. I'm more concerned about people smashing a window and trying to take my speakers.. If i had an alarm it'd at least warn me to get down there with my baseball bat..

Superglue on top of the screwhead prevents them being taken out but you still suffer the damage done breaking into your car in the first place, unfortunately there is no way to stop this except maybe moving somewhere safer.

hahaha... joke..... :wink: Redfern used to be safe back in the 60s, when I worked at Eveleigh Loco workshops..
Now? I wouldn't go there after dark.. too many derros! :shock:

Nah no joke.. I do live in redfern.. been here my whole life (which is only 18yrs so far).. Everleigh st was pretty bad but its been cleaned up now... the only bad area is where redfern meets waterloo... all the housing comission areas, not nice places. But other then that it's fine.. The streets are dead at night times. Most of the derros around here are pretty harmless.. just strange :D hahah

Most alarms these days come with shock sensors, or microwave sensors.. And if they dont you can usually get them as an add on, You can also get tilt sensors. Id try to stay away from the alarms they sell at Strathfield, there are thousands of different types of alarms out there, some insurance places even specify what type of alarm to use..

Coming from Sydney I'm still amazed when walking through the local coles carpark at the amount of cars parked with windows all the way down usually with valuables in plain sight. In 5 years though I haven't heard of a single car being stolen and I chat to the cops most days (hard to avoid when you live behind a cop station). 95% of crime here is nothing more than speeding or drink related violence.

Thanks gordo.. I saw those alarms at strathfields.. they looked kinda bodgy to me, ill stay away from them.. Wolfman, when I was at school heaps of kids got into stealing cars.. they used to drive them to school.. thought they were so cool (no my school wasn't in redfern..lol) I'm not wanting kids like that to have a go at the mini.. also someone mentioned on here about how they came back and found their mini half up on the gutter.. some idiots did it as a joke, and would have caused damage.. I guess an alarm won't really stop that though :P
