I'm fairly new to reading the numbers but I think it's a stock leyland mini with a 1098cc. build number 1878. not sure on year though. Also, are you sure it's w10 and not m10? |

The lines appear to be a bit blurred by the mid-1970s. I have seen 021 and 022 cars listed as Mini S. 021 stood for YDO21, which was the Mini 1100, or standard Mini (with Clubman front end). 022 was for YDO22, which was Mini 1100 De Luxe or Mini Clubman. 023 was for YDO23, Mini Clubman GT. When the Mini Clubman range was introduced (August 1971) they were listed as YG2S6 (Mini 1100 - YDO21) YG2S7 (Mini 1100 De Luxe - YDO22) and YG2S8 (Mini Clubman GT - YDO23). The Clubman GT was discontinued in January 1973. In about March 1973 the Mini Clubman S was introduced, and within a month hydrolastic suspension was discontinued, along with the Clubman name and the remaining cars were redesignated 021 Leyland Mini and 022 Leyland Mini S. However, even by then the Leyland Mini was a considerable improvement on the Mini 1100, due to ADR compliance and range-wide improvements. In fact, in terms of specification, apart from dry suspension, the Leyland Mini was closer to the Mini Clubman then to the Mini 1100. The Leyland Mini S was simply a spec'd-up Leyland Mini, and all the components that went into making a Mini S were available as optional extras anyway. The other important part of the car prefix is 2S2 - where 2S means 2-door saloon; and the second 2 represents the trim level. This is interesting as the above mentioned car has trim level 2 (Mini S) but is 021 (std Leyland Mini). So, technically speaking, an 021 car is a Leyland Mini, even if it has S-type options. A Mini S is an 022. That is, unless the compliance plate has Mini S listed - which would be typical of Leyland, or perhaps a mistake in the factory, to throw in an anomaly. Cheers, Watto. |

Watto, I really think they had two levels of trim in both the Leyland Mini and Leyland Mini S. I have seen many stock Leyland Minis with level 2 trim. (two hole instrument cluster, no chrome around the doors, etc.) I have also seen a lot of Mini S with trim level 1 (I have one!) Could it be something like full vinyl trim for level 1 and cloth inserts for level 2? I have seen both in the S. I think it warrants investigation with any former factory people you come in touch with. |

Engine number 1015/11061. Thanks The engine number is the right one for a first half of 75 car. This is an Enfield built Mini with a Zetland built engine. |
