I have a 998 engine and I want to fit a 1098 (202) head to it. The head has the 1098 pushrods, will this bolt straight on and what should I check/set the tappet clearances to? |

yes it will. are you running a standard cam? if so, gap to .12-.15thou |

C/R will be a bit lower as the 202 head has bigger chambers. I'd rip .040"-.050" off it first. ![]() |

i`d check the chamber & block volumes first to make sure it doesn`t end up either too low or too high in compression ratio & yes 998 push rods are the same as 1098 push rods & yes you should always re-set rocker clearances when swapping heads/rockers etc & re-torque it again after it`s had it`s first heat-cycle |

Another question, I cleaned the tops of the pistons and the block face this arvo and noticed the (dished) pistons have a stamp around the edges saying 20773 + 040 EAN (I think it's a bit hard to read). The bores are 65.4mm and the stroke is 76.4mm from block surface to the high edge of the piston. Is this a 998 stroke ![]() ![]() |

It's 998 stroke yes, and the bore is +.020" if you measured it correct. If the piston is marked .040 the bore would measure 65.6. So either you measured the bore wrong, or the pistons are marked 020 not 040. |

Pistons definitely say 040 and the bore, measured with verniers dropped in the top of the cylinder as deep as they go (10mm or so) is definitely 65.5mm ish. Hit a problem, one of the tappet adjusters (where the flat blade screwdriver goes) snapped off. Can I just replace the broken one and would they be the same off another rocker gear, is their a difference I should look for? |

There are 2 sorts of standard rockers apart from S forged ones. The pressed steel ones have a smaller thread and these screw slots are more fragile than those in the later sintered rockers. As long as you find another rocker of the same sort, just swap the screw (or the whole rocker if the bush and rocker pad isn't worn). |

I sorted out the snapped rocker issue. Now I need to know the best way to set them. I have the engine at TDC and I read a bit in the manual but it didn't make sense to me. So some simple help is what I need please. |

The method that requires the least thinking is the one i think is in the workshop manual? There are 8 rockers, number them 1 to 8 left to right, or right to left if you swing that way. You then pick the number 9 because that's the number you want. Put the car in gear and pull it along so the motor turns over. 4th gear is easiest. You can also just turn the crankshaft/flywheel or if your fan belt is tight enough turn that, but not if it's plastic! Get a valve fully open, so if that's no. 1, then you need to adjust no. 8. Why no. 8? Because 1 + 8 = 9 There will be 2 valves fully open at the same time, so adjust that as well then pull the car forward (or backwards) to the next lot. So if number 3 is down (fully open), adjust number 6 because 3+6=9 Simple hey As for actually adjusting them, i just close the gap up, then get my feeler gauge and try and shove it between the valve and rocker pad. Then unscrew the rocker until the feeler gauge slides in. Then tighten the lock nut up and double check the clearance. If the pads on the rockers are worn it won't give you a true reading though. |
