I don't know about rumors, but when I called about my mini I was advised it had to go over the pits. Mind you there is no record of it ever being registered in Aus

anyone else heard the rumours if your cars been out of rego for a long period it's no longer going to be a walk in rego? I hear murmurs they're going to have to go through regency if they've been unregistered for long periods. what i hear is if it's out of reg for something like 2 or 3 years it'll have to go over the pits anyone know anything of this? all i've got are rumours |

This doesn't sound like a bad idea. Sure it's a hassle, you might actually have to fix your high beams and indicators but it will get a lot of scary cars off the road Rather, prevent them from getting back there in the first place |

I guess you would only be concerned if your vehicle was not roadworthy? if it was then a trip over the pits should not be a worry. |

I suspect it needs to go to regency for an ID inspection... I'm not sure it needs a roadworthy.. |

The ACT has 2 year's unreg before having to recheck for rego. It works well and we only have to put 3 month rego on to reset the time frame. Only scary if you have illegal mods. It's really just a safety check. I personally would rather think that the car behind me actually had brakes etc.. Cheers Rob |

If the car was previously registered in SA, many people have re-registered cars that were years out of date by doing everything online. True story...... |

Whilst it would be great to be able to do that with a classic, I can just imagine the death traps and illegally modded cars just slipping through 
Personally I think it is much better to put them over the pits. |

Why are people so worried by safety inspections? I'd prefer to know that I, as well as other road users, were driving safe cars. Working as a mechanic for 17 years I saw all sorts of death traps, and the fewer of them on the roads the better. Dicko. |

opening up the 'can of worms'... I see a big difference between safety and legality... my seat mounts made by a very experienced trade qualified boilermaker, i would rate at being much stronger than the original mounting style, however as i haven't paid the 3k to get them engineered, technically they're illegal. also a thing as simple as a sports steering wheel is not legal, though i'm sure most of us have one on a car... sure i can change a heap of parts out to get it over the pits but what a PITA. I like SA's slack systems! rust buckets just make us more wary drivers! end of can opening - debate-bag me away!

It sounds a lot better when you use the Department's terminology. "The onus is on you to ensure the vehicle is in a roadworthy state." If you try otherwise it can be dangerous and/or expensive. But everyone is used to this being the situation for other ideas, like speeding, mobile phone use, pedophilia or failing to indicate. The nation would be up in arms if vehicles were required to be fitted with a mechanical speed limiter or a government approved speed checker that reminds you that you're over the speed limit. (if you don't already have a wife) What would you like? A sense of responsibility or a nanny state? |

Wonder how fibreglass panels, bonnet pins, perspex windows, roll cages, beam axles will fare? This one was last reigistered [by me] in 1982 and has been sitting at the back of my shed since then. I still have the original [1967] plates. |

Registered owner can re register whenever, i got a mini going that had been off the road 18 years, the owner took the last paper into an office paid and got a sticker, easy. |
