Can you do this just on an engine or only a complete car with a VIN number etc???? I am thinking ahead when registering a car and hoping a stat declaration with the details of the seller will suffice. But would like to find out before all the reconditioning work in case it is dodgy. |

Dave you can only do a revs check on an engine if you pretend it's in a car and quote the car's vin or chassis number. At least that's how it used to work... Sometimes funny things happen. I bought an unregistered Mini 850 project years ago with a 1293A+ motor in it. I transferred the motor into Barney and updated the reg's engine number via blueslip, no problem. A few years later we sold Barney on to a guy who works at Qantas. Evan bought the car from him, did a revs check, and the motor came up with some encumbrance on it from yonks ago. ![]() ![]() |

REVS has been changed this year to the PPSR. I found a site asking for a 17 digit VIN - but would also take a chassis number. Paid $9.95, put in the chassis number - hoping I could then put in an engine number but got a receipt for the money and 'vechicle not found' message displayed. ![]() |

I went into the RTA to ask if they could tell me if the engine i want to put in my bike was stolen, they said the only way to find out is to put it in the bike, get a blue slip and then they would do a search on the number. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yes just had the same sort of story. Rang RTA and they said can't do it try the PPSR people or the Police Help Line. Rang both - no can check just the engine number. Police Help Line said to go into a Police station and maybe they could run an identity check maybe not. Crazy thing when I registered the Monaro they had all the details from 1982 of the engine number rego plate details etc. I guess all you can do is turn up with a stat dec stating you bought it from wherever and hope that is enough - or wait to you get home to see if the boys in blue are waiting. BTW- I did find many websites with engine numbers that were stolen from boat engines to motorcycles - but nothing car related. |

When I acquired the MG, it had passed unregistered through a couple of owners and an auction house. All I had to do was provide a stat dec from the previous owner. I didn't mind at all but it struck me as an easy way to pass off a stolen car if you were prepared to wait a couple years. |

When i bought mine, I tried to find out its rego history and found Vic Roads to be the most helpful ![]() If you want to find out details on an unregistered vehicle try asking them about rego history as it is a barn find and you are not sure of the year of manufacture (I wasn't, mine was sold as a 67 but is most likely a 68). Persist a little and you should be transferred to their archive section ![]() They also confirmed that all states are now link via their databases ![]() |

If it's stolen you will find out soon enough when they do the blueslip and rego. As a member here found out, he got his car back restored and was a happy chappie.. ![]() |

![]() Yep, you need to stick a space after the 8 and before the ) so that it looks like 8 ) anstead of ![]() |

As a member here found out, he got his car back restored and was a happy chappie.. ![]() That is what I am worried about, if it is stolen I have no problem handing it back to its rightful owner I just dont want spend a fortune reco-ing it and then have to hand it over especially when I will only be using the crank cases and all the rest of the engine is definitely mine |
