Can anyone confirm or deny if the letter 'P' at the end of the cooper S engine number indicated it was a Police Vehicle???

Police numbers are in this format (I owned this block and had it stamped back in 1966):

N661771P where N= NSW, 66 = year, 1771 is number issued (that year), P = Fuzz.

For Vic the 1st digit is V, Qld is Q, etc etc.

I think Dalmini is talking about a cooper S pursuit vehicle engine number. Doc I think your talking about getting a police issued number on Block because the number is gone...

We had an ex Police Cooper S, and the engine number was the standard 9FXEY#####, with no P.

If Your Question is did police cars have the letter P stamped on the block
Then My answer would be No.
I have purchased a lot of ex police cars over the years
and I have never seen this

If the question is is this a number supplied by the Police Then the answer is also No

Thanks, I'll make more enquiries as to the whole number.

I've never heard of or seen an ex-NSW Police Cooper S with anything but the normal engine number.

Does the P look like it is part of the original stamping (i.e. stamped in the same font, depth and position as the rest of the number)?

I probably jumped the gun. I should have had a look before I asked the question. I'm only going on what I was told by the owner.

Engine numbers can have a letter at the end of the number to signify certain things. Just that a P isn't one I have seen.

The block was issued a new number by the Police in NSW in 1981.
