Post subject:  7" disc brake question

hi all i have found i have a set of 7" disc brakes. i know that they are different to cooper S 7.5" disc setup.

what i would like to know is there a difference between 997 and 998 7"cooper brakes, like pad size, calipers if they are any different pistion size etc also is there anything else i should know about these when fitting them up.

i know they are small and its going on a 850 so its no power house. i just want to put them the car.

thankyou

The 7" rotors are the same for both 997 and 998.
997 pads are postage stamp sizes and useless (and probably are NLA now).
998 pads are bigger and much better. 997 calipers can be milled out to take 998 pads (I did it). The split pins are in the same place.
Pistons and seals in both these calipers are the same.

These days I would fit S brakes, unless it's a genuine Cooper...
They are more durable and stop better- the 7" rotors were only 1/4" thick. 7-1/2" S ones are 3/8" thick. Pistons and pads are bigger too.

[edit] these Cooper ones will be OK on your 850 and use the same CVs.
But replace the 850's 0.75" MC with a 0.7" one and add a servo, or else try and find a 998 Cooper MC (they were .625" bore).

Or you can use the 997 Cooper hubs to upgrade the brakes to Cooper S specifications. Need some Coopers S calipers (, CV joints, drive flanges, discs and bearings to suit (all available new).
