The numbers you refer to are for the distributor, not the coil.

I'm not sure what the correct type of coil is, but I'm sure someone will let you know soon.

Cooper and S got an HA12 coil the rest got an LA12.
I've had a good run over the years with Australian Bosch GT40 coils; Bosch Blue ones (as used on VW etc) are also OK on a regular Mini.

Many/most new coils now come out of China so it's a bit of a lottery, whether Bosch or `Lucas'.

Wow.. That i reckon would be the original coil from your car from factory thats crazy 8/73... your car is a 73, thats crazy. if it still works keep it on i reckon.

just a 12V coil WITHOUT a ballast resistor in it will work. I have heard good things about GT40's.

If the coils aren't abused they can last a long time

That would be a 29D dizzy, seeing as the rest of the car looks original, probably dated 1973 as well

Only problem is that these dizzys can wear very badly, but see how yours looks.

edit: oh and no Oz mini had a ballast resistor, so don't worry about that.

All pretty much the same coil... from memory the Cooper S got a different one. You can use any standard coil designed for 12V (no ballast resistor), should work fine on a stock donk. Cheers, Jacob

Oops yeah my brain crashed while trying to solve the starting problem. Thanks for that its a steep learning or relearning curve with restoring a mini , so many things to do , and the manuals being rather vague doesnt help much and not knowing what has be replaced over the years too. Brenton Cheers , yer i dont know how long she's been in mothballs .. but the 8/73 on the bottom of the coil surprised me , she had spark today but just wouldnt fire so im onto the carby now. As for the Gt40's i could get one but i have been looking at the electronic points + Coil + Distributor and leads packages as i thought they would be compatible with each other part in the kit. Edit : How can you tell if it has a ballast resistor or not ? .. sorry noob here Edit : Here's a picture of the Dizzy " hope it's enough to tell which one " .
