The 1 means "Enamel" and the "3" is berger ... as per http://www.elevenhundred.com/colours.php

As for a colour code... black is black isn't it? :mrgreen:

(black is pretty rare for an 850)

cheers,

Jacob

They definitely did make black Minis. I have seen a few Cooper and 850s that were factory black.
The 1 and 3 on the paint code refer to the type of paint (1 = enamel) and the maker of the paint (3 = Berger)
Unfortunately I don't know the paint code for the Black.

Take another look at your ID plate, It will read YMA2S1

Y = Australian assembled
M = Morris
A = 0 to 1000cc
2S = 2 door saloon
1 = Morris 850

Car 39543 would have been made some time around the end of 63 or the start of 64. (My own estimate would be around Feb/March 64 but I am only guessing from numbers)

I will see if I can find a Berger paint number for Black.

I don't think they made many in black, but looking at the numbers of the black ones that I have seen it seems that they must have made a couple every year from 62 to 65.
All the black ones I have seen have had a red interior, I don't know if they made any with other colours.

Gotta agree with Jacob. Black (I believe) is Black. Black tinter without anything else.

Is this right?

Alex.

My first mini was a Black 1964 850 with red upholstery. I think that the later Deluxe trim had been fitted as the side covers above the back wheels was the harder 850 with a black pattern.
It had a wooden dashboard and Aunger mag wheels.
It was fitted later with an 1100 engine and remote all synchro gearbox. Extras included RHS tank and extractors.
Brakes were upgraded to the twin leading shoe.

Checked all of my old Dulon paint codes for BMC and Black does not appear in the BMC colour range for years 1961 through 1969. Very strange as I know for sure that there were black 850s and Coopers(997).

The Dulon Tinters - General Information sheet does list Full Black as code 5431 and was used as full colour. I'm guessing this is what was used.

Many non-metallic black colours don't have a formula. Or the formula they give you is just straight black tinter.... that's it.
So it wouldn't surprise me if the 850 black was the same . :wink:

Dulon or Berger paint sheets?

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... 10d35b0dbd

seems there are alot of inaccuracies with colour charts, active years and when the car was painted versus when it was sold.

The inaccuracy seems to come from the dates in the Dulux books.
Dulux was not the major paint supplier to BMC, Berger paints was.
The industry all used the Dulux books so the mistakes soon became facts.
