Received a phonecall today with the sad news that Tom Galbraith, proprietor of Motorlab here in Unley apparently passed away last Saturday. Tom and the Motorlab team (his wife Raelene and several others raced cars he had prepared) were big on the Mini scene back in the day - whenever when we took our cars in his office wall was still littered with curled photos of race Minis. I'm sure there are plenty on here and all over SA who remember him and will miss him. Our thoughts are with Raelene and his family and staff. Vale ![]() ![]() |

Sad news. Motorlab inspired me to buy an S in the first place. I used to pass by their workshop everyday on my way to uni and frequently saw the rear ends of Minis sticking out the door whilst they were on their dyno (in those days the entrance to the dyno was through a door on Duthy Street right next to the footpath). I was toying with the idea of buying a Cortina GT (would of loved a GT500) or a Mini, but in the end the chuckability and nibbleness of a Mini won out. In 1970 Motorlab rebuilt the motor of my first (Mk1) Cooper S for the princely sum of $400 - I still have the original invoice for the work. I first saw Tom Galbraith racing his Mini at Mallalla in 1966, but unfortunately he had problems with his eyesight so his wife took over the driving instead. They used to park the race car on the forecourt outside the Motorlab petrol station. RIP Tom. |
