has anyone used one of these 'shorter' filter mounts? How much shorter are they?

Overall width from block mounting flange is the same.
Height from stud hole centres down to filter face is 25mm, std spin-on one is approx 30mm.

Hmmm, well that stuffs my plan. I'm having trouble fitting the oil cooler in, seems I'll have zero clearance between it and filter. ???????

Where are you trying to fit the oil cooler?
It normally is close to the starter motor and distributor
Can you put up some photos?

I'm trying to fit it to a rover with the later starter motor, the solinoid is in the way so the go is to fit it on lhs of opening but that raises the problem of clearance between grill opening and oil filter.

what sarter have you got?

Yes a cooler gets in the way of the Lucas pre-engaged Rover starter, also the geMini pre-engaged starter (on pre-Verto clutch cars).

Convertible mini on here sells a Bosch pre-engaged planetary geared starter which does fit yours though, as it has the solenoid positioned at the bottom, not the top.
Spins my 1360 (with 11.0:1 C/R) like a top. It has another advantage- as it's a modified 6 cylinder starter it'll probably last forever on a Mini. :P

Here's a pic of mine installed (which has the early clutch, but Tony also makes a version of it for Verto ones):

wouldn't the end housing near mount, get in way of flywheel crank sensor on rover SPI?

No idea- but Tony sells em for Rovers. I'd PM `convertible mini' and ask him.
