Post subject: | Mk1 - Mk2 |
Did we get both Mk1 and Mk2 Mini's in Aus? Looking at the web it seems Mk1 ended in 67 and Mk2 started in 67. Just wondering as mine is meant to be approx a mid 68 would that make it a Mk2? cheers, CJ |

Bodywise all Oz made Minis are Mk1s (by UK standards). They have a Mk1 size rear window, door opening and rear side window sizes. And external door hinges. Yes the Mk2 Minis came out in UK in 1967, but this bears no relation to Oz models. It's true to say however that yes, around 1969 we got a Mk2 Cooper S, a Mk2 Mini Deluxe (called Mini K) and a Mk2 MiniMatic built here, but these were Australian designations only. |

That's kind of what I expected since I have never seen any Mini's that resemble the Mk2. |

Like DrMini says we never got the Mk1 and Mk2 like the English did. BMC Australia did things a bit differently. The big differences between the Mk1 and Mk2 in Australia was the fitting of the alternator, changed blinker switch with the horn on the end, new steering wheel, locally made speedo and a few other bits and pieces. The Deluxe was a Mk1. The "K" was a Mk2. (The "K" is listed in some BMC books as the Deluxe Mk2) |

Post subject: | Australian Cooper S Models |
There were a handful of UK manufactured cars imported and understood to be the 1071cc early versions. The first manufactured Aus Mk 1 Cooper S was fitted with wind-up (or down) windows in July 1965 a few months after they were introduced on the first Deluxe (28/3/65). The Mk1 was superseded by the Mk2 in May 1969. These first run of Mk 2s were factory dispatched without identification plates but still stamped. Its widely understood the Mk 2 was prompted by SA & then WA requiring BMC to fit flares (as we call them in Australia). The early ones were wider flares and largely thought to be after market. The bonnet badge is another noticeable change, as well the way the wipers sit. Check the scuttle panel change. This allowed the driver's wiper to sweep further for the driver's improved vision. There are many changes between the two models, and even changes made in the Mk2 production like heaters. In late 1970 by example there were a number (a learned person told me about 250) of Smiths Beehive heaters up to about No.2800. In December 1970 BMLC commenced production of a further change in the Cooper S Mk 2. These 112 or 113 final run cars 'til July (or August) 1971 have been called Mk3, Mk2a but really they are still Mk2 cars, with further changes made. the easiest recognisable part is the non-producing door handles. But there are again many changes in these cars. |
