Hi John,
"This was the final of the Jack Hayward Smash Repairs sponsored minis, and was built by Geoffrey Simmons. Jack purchased this car for $95 as a stolen/recovered vehicle from NRMA Insurance. It was a black, beautiful long stroke cooper, that had been dumped in water. It even had a tide mark in the speedometer!
Of course, we completely stripped the car and rebuilt it with all original steel panels (with bracing removed). Original sub frames were used. The true genius to this car's handling was the strengthening and bracing of the sub frames by Geoffrey.
The engine was a 1408 cc Cooper S (including cylinder head), with one 45mm weber.
Close ratio gear box. 3.4 diff. 9000 rpm. 10 inch steel wheels with big bag good year tyres.
At Bathurst in this guise, this car did 142.3 mph - not assisted by Peter Brock ( who was not there) or anyone else!
After the meeting, we did have to cut the flywheel from the crank, as they had welded together"
Many Thanks,
Lynn & Trish Brown
