Post subject:  Removing Glued On Carpet

Hi, I have the lovely job ahead of me trying to get all the carpet out of my shell, it has been stuck on with that thick contact adhesive, and it is a real pain in the @ss to get off.

I was wondering if anybody knew a product that dissolves of softens it, or if you have an easy way of getting the carpet off. If not I will continue to chip away with a screwdriver and scraper.

You could try a heat gun to soften the glue. If you aren't worried about keeping the carpet, its possible acetone will dissolve it.
They didn't work for me, I had to use a wire wheel in a grinder.

Must be the same glue that I have. I think they glued the carpet down so nobody could see the rust underneath. My next carpet will be removable so I can see if any water gets in and if it does I can dry the carpet and fix the leak. I think I will tackle mine with the wire wheel too.

If you have the right carpet you don't need glue. The moulded stuff fits fine and is retained enough from the various things that poke through like seat brackets.
If its a multiple piece carpet, just use double sided tape or water based glue.
At least then when the carpet comes unstuck you know its because its wet making the cleanup easier!

Be careful with acetone though.

acetone will take glue off...........and paint. If its normal contact cement, spray liberally with turps, carpet should come off with blunt scrapper the next day.
