Post subject:  1100S Block (1275) Question

Morning all,

I have an 1100S block that is 99% built up with Gearbox, clutch head etc all on, last night I was looking at all the fiddly bits, transfering over fittings for oil lines, water temp gauge, etc. from the old 998 block.

The question is: on the rear of the block right in the middle, (just below where the cam follower cover plates "should" be if it were an 998 or S block) there is a hole. Tapped with a UNC thread of maybe 3/8" (i didn't check  )

Any idea what this is there for?
What should I do with it?
Does it go to any water or oil galleries?

Please help, I need to fit the motor tonight so I can make the mini muster on the weekend!

Cheers
Matthew

all my 1100 S blocks and even the A+ have them i am not sure what is was intended for but it is a greta spot for a knock sensor (pinking)(detonation)

my 2c worth

They didn't mount a fuel line brace or anything there?

I can't imagine them going through a three step process on the production line for nothing. Maybe it was used somewhere in the engine assembly process.

that point is used on auto blocks as the kick down pivot point, from the throttle linkage to the gear box, may just be done to all blocks on the production line ?

Thanks,

So it doesn't lead to oil galleries or water galleries (i didn't look too close at 3am this morning when I discovered it... )

I can just get a 'sump plug' style bolt to cover it?

Boosted mini, what is a knock sensor? Never heard of them!

no it does not lead any where mine is just left as is open.

a knock sensor is a device which can inform either an ignition system or the like or even by lights to the driver when knocking, pinking, pinging, detonation (just different names for the same thing) occurs, which is when you have the timing to far advanced or the fuel octane is low, or even hot spots in the combustion chamber. usually it is a case when the spark plug fires prior to the optimum time on the compression stroke causing an incorrectly timed explosion and the burnt gases cannot escape fats enough through the closed valves.

i have not been overly clear but that is it in a nut shell

A knock sensor is used to retard the ignition and maybe other stuff(can't remember) on a car that uses EFI basicly the car advances the ignition as it seems appropriate ie as revs increase but once it senses knocking ie ignition is happening to early and forcing the piston back the other way down the bore on the compression stroke (this is bad) it backs the ignition advance of a bit to stop the knock.

This way the EFI ensures that the engine always has the greatest amount of time possible to burn the mixture resulting in a cleaner burn and better fuel economy
