Hey Guys Just wanted to let you guys know about supersprints for those that don't know much about them. I went and officialled at our Club's supersprint at Eastern Creek last Saturday (June 4th). I really wanted to race, but money's very tight, and the club needed some officials so I helped out/watched instead. From what I could see, the day ran extremely smoothly, and although I have heard some people in the past complain about the price ($180 for the day), I think you can get pretty good value for money. The way the day works is the cars are divided into groups according to the lap times they should do. They send out the cars in pairs, ten seconds apart, and let i think 14 onto the track at once (7 pairs). You get let out just before the last few corners of the circuit, so the first time you come down the main straight, timing is on. You get three flying laps and then half a lap slow down, and get taken off the back of the circuit into the back of the pits. Marshalls are all in radio contact so as soon as the last car is off the track, the next group goes out. Very minimal downtime. The results are basically whoever scores the best laptime in thieir class. Like a huge qualifying session! At first I thought there would only be a few runs each and it was expensive, but the running just got quicker and quicker all day and by the end, I think some people had lost interest, or broken down, because others were getting more and more frequent runs - i swear some people must've had ten or eleven runs each!! It was great to see the variety of cars there as well. Of course, there were a lot of nice minis ranging from stockies, to Group Nb race cars and fully modded sports sedans. There was every cort of car you can think of from Mazda MX5's to PRB clubmans to Formula fords to a stock standard Commodore Wagon (not a race car, but I can tell you from the smile on the drivers face he had as much fun as anyone!!! ). I got to sit on the flag point at Turn 2 - where all the action happens!! There were two bingles throughout the day, and they both happened in front of me. Officialling was a lot more fun than I thought, and the day went quite quickly. It's also the best way to see all the action close-up. Anyways, thats about it - we're organising another one for Oran Park in October. I'll post up some info when I have it. |
