I finally got my mini back on the road after 5 years. For some reason when I'm at the lights, she idles and then stops. It's a mini rover import auto. It has been in 2 times in the last 3days to the mechanic but still I'm having this problem and I can't keep paying the mechanic money for not fixing it. I need help?

Got more information at all? Carbies, ignition, engine age?

It's a 1990 model but I think the engine is 88-89 there abouts. Single carbi, runs on unleaded and has a catalytic converter on it. I really don't know to much about it. It was a Japanese import and it had to be an auto so the wife could drive it. Cheers!

Start with the simple stuff and make sure the mechanics checked it out...
Points and condensor and pretty much everything inside the distributor.
Carby bits and pieces... Mixture, air filter, idle speed.

Will it keep going if you rev it a bit at the lights or will it die no matter what once you stop?

Enough oil in the carby?

Had this problem with my recent countryman restoration, would run fine but as soon as you stopped it would cut out. Turned out to be the oil damper plug in the top of the carb didnt have a tiny hole in it, took us hours of swapping carb bits around until we found the problem.

If I rev it at the lights it will keep going, but once I take my foot off the gas when stationary it will stop. I was told by the mechanic that it was idling at 1000rpm which should be fine but I think it drops to around 600rpm when stationary. Then sputters out and stops.

sounds like the butterfly in the carb is worn or not seating properly. Could also be the vac advance on the dissy sticking or getting some vac at idle (when it shouldn't). Has the mechanic check the fuel level in the float bowl?

Killkeny.

Just a "wild Card". Are you holding the brake on. I had a car many years back where the brake booster vacume diaphram leaked. Everytime I held the brake (at lights, LOL) it stalled.

Cheers
Alex
