Had to change the radiator in my works car, 1996 Ford EF Sedan, took it out and there was a lot of oil coming out of the bottom brass connection, not sure if its engine oil or gearbox oil, after replacing the radiator took it for a drive and found out it must have been gearbox oil, because it was changing gear really sh1t house and slambing into first on takeoff, my question is....Now dont laugh and be genytle with me..... where do you top up the gearbox oil, there aint nothing visible in the engine bay, so where is it and what type of oil do I need to replace the oil I lost... I know its in the wrong section but everyone goes in here first...sorry Mods..... |

There will be a bung on the side of the gearbox that needs to be taken out, you add oil until it starts to come back out the hole (ie, the bottom of the hole is the oil level) Not the easiest task to complete at home, much easier on a hoist with a means of pumping the oil in. Can't remember the oil but it is obviously some form od ATF. |

Found this on a Ford Forum:-There is a plug on the drivers side of the transmission roughly behind the cat convertor. Undo this and oil should run out, if not, top up till it does and refit the plug. Oil should be nice and pink, if it is dark brown or even black, get you trans flushed and serviced. |

Back in the day of full service servos, I used to top up trans fluid through the dipstick tube whilst pumping petrol for people. Get the right shaped funnel and go slow, checking frequently seemed to work ok. |

Yeah you fill up through the dipstick tube Davo. As far as fluid type goes, you can look up lube manufacturer's web sites or ask it the place you buy the fluid and they can look it up for you. |

I don't think these Fords have a dipstick to top them up with. You need to get under and get dirty. Years ago I used to make a pressure bottle for filling gearbox oil out of a plastic 5 litre oil bottle, a bit of garden hose and a tubeless schrader valve. Now days you can pick something up from Supercrap for $5 that will do a similar job but probably with less risk of blowing oil all over the place. |

that was the problem, no dip stick, or i would know if it needeed oil or not, thats why i am seeking assistance, i lost about 500 mls, when it run out all over the driveway, so it will definately need a top up, any special oil i need, and does supercrap sell it. |

Castrol TQ95, or Mobil ATF95LE in my Ford book (for an AU but it's the same BTR 4 speed trans.) Supercrap should have the castrol one. Check their book whilst you are there. |
