I have a thermo fan fitted with a manual switch & relay incorporated mounted under dash.

Question is.,, I would like to change it to a temperature controlled switch from the radiator.

Me thinks that all I really need to do is run the relay to the temp switch mounted in my radiator instead of the manually mounted one to the fan . Should be pretty simple. ??

Yeah it's easy. I haven't done it to my mini yet but I fitted one to another Car I have and you just run an accessories wire to the thermo switch and then run that to the part that turns the relay on and off, make sure you put a fuse on the wire to the battery also cos I found that they draw a lot of amps and tend to want to melt wires if you don't. Hope that helps :)

If your melting wires then you've run the wrong gauge wire. You need a bigger / thicker conductor.
A fuse protects the wiring, not the component on the end.

Thermo fans will run constantly at 8 or so amps, depending on size, and startup current can be double the running current!

Cheers Shane

My suggestion would be to buy the Craig Davies electronic fan switch. Basically its a probe that goes between the fins of the radiator. After 3 different attempts and mechanical switches and so forth I found this one to be the best.

You can adjust the temp it turns on with the relay provided in the kit. Basically you need to hook the relay to power, ignition, the fan, earth and the probe itself. Pretty simple really.

Thanks I'll look it up.

With a relay already installed to the under dash switch I'll just swing the wiring over to the thermo switch

Jaycar kit is a much cheaper option:
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5381&CATID=25&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=347
Has adjustable temperature switching and importantly adjustable hysteresis
