As silly as it sounds if they were installed as an accessory in 1968 they didn't need engineering and also it is illegal to remove belts once they are fitted.

hi there a friend of mine has a mini matic, its 1968, and it has no rear seatbelts the rwc guy said to pass a rwc it would have to get an engineer cert for rear seatbelts, i thought that rear seatbelts were std the answer i would like to know did they come std on 1968 minis because of ADR or has my friend just forgotten to put them in. thanks |

68 minis didn't have them. If he takes them out the guy can't reject him. As a side note, how would the mechanic know if they're engineered or not? Do they put mod codes on the rego label or something? |

No rear belts in a 1968, they were not compulsory fitment until Jan 1972 or 73. So not needed for rego... my 1970 `Matic hasn't got em either. |

correct they are not required to be fitted due to the regs at the time of production, however.... if rear seat belts ARE installed they must be engineer certified. |

my 68 matic had an after market year seat belt fitted so we could put the baby cradle in there it didn't have one before that |

My 1963 mini had rear seatbelts installed by a previous owner, but were not engineered. If I take them out would I be picked up at rego time if the inspector saw the old mounting holes? |

Why not leave em in? If frayed or damaged, you can legally replace them.. |

The inspector cannot inspect them as safe because they have not been engineered. Just pull them out, to keep them happy |

And when I pull them out should I leave the seatbelt mounting bolts in or try to cover up the holes left? |

But if he's forcing you to remove them, he then really can't bitch if you leave the mounting points empty. |
