Post subject:  Paint clarification

Hi:
I'm painting my test door for my mini project to get a bit of practice and check out the colour as i'm going base coat x3 is that enough ? , clear coat x2, metallic coat x3 ?, clear coat x2 .... ive bought a few different coloured flakes and pearls just to practice with and see how they look.Im going to checker board the door after its painted and clear coated and spray different flake colouts/effectss in the different squares.

Ive read Phat Katts painting guide and it didnt mention the amount of time between base coat and clear coat , as in how much time can you leave it between coats from minimum to maximum as to promote the best adhesion. I will be going by the manufactures guide as to the time for the specific coat , just not sure when switching from base to the clear min/max time wise

Also do you need to rub back the base coat if your going to clear coat it ?

And probably heaps more questions to come :-) as im the type of person who needs to be able to do somerthing without ever doing it before lol. " yes its tough being me :-) "

Cheers Bill

dont quote me on this but i think when you are painting anything with fleck in it you should colour sand the the base coat before you clear it.
All the drying times should be on the tech sheets that your paint supplier should give you.

that is my 2 cents

2k or acrylic? I use this stuff all the time and basically you lay down a base colour, then mix the metal flake into clear coat or i use colour blender. Spray it on from a good distance with full fan, when it goes on its rough as hell so once you clear coat it, you need to rub it down with 2-3000 paper and flow coat it, rub that down and cut/polish it. The amount of coats will depend on the transparency of the base colour, there's no rule for how many coats of base just make sure it's covered! Clear coat also depends on brand etc as to how many coats, but generally one semi wet "set up coat" and then one full gloss coat will be ample (but I'm talking about 2k)

I like using ppg prismatic, it's not as coarse but gives a nice effect and is versatile and can be mixed through all different kandies etc

This is 1 dust coat of prismatic in the green it shows up easy

Thanks for the replies , yeah i forgot to mention its acrylic sorry.

The main thing that worries me is the time between base coat to clear coat etc ,

Can you leave it a day or even a week before putting on the clear coats ? or does it have to be after the base coat has flashed off for the correct adhesion , if you get my drift

Helmet looks cool btw

Cheers Bill
