Wow, I need to do some re-wiring in the dash before I think about rego so off I headed today to grab some wire. Man have things changed since I last worked on cars?????

Doesn't anyone do electrical work anymore? :?: Everywhere I went had no automotive wire, well most salespersons looked more like  with me  No I don't mean speaker wire! There are other wires in a car besides speaker wire......... (man I would love to find a sales guy who is more than half the age of my mini :? )

Anyhoo, can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of general purpose wire? I have tried the usual, Dick Smiths, Jaycar, Supercrap etc etc Even Ebay seems to think you only need speaker wire nowadays

Best I could muster was some semi suitable twin core which will do for re-wiring the horn for now....

cheers,

CJ

I bought a 5m roll (Narva brand) from bunnings the other day. I woulda though any auto shop would have it. Repco and autobarn should have it.

Just a roll (some places do it by the meter from a big roll) all the one colour usually.

If you really get stuck just stop in at a auto sparkies and tell him you want to buy some wire, my experience here is they will often help you out (they probably have more colours too)

If you were in Melbourne I'd tell yo to try Radio Parts Group in West Melbourne.

Last time I was in the market they had a large selection of colours and gauges.

Maybe if you have no other luck you could try tracking them down.

Repco usually stock wire. I bought some small rolls from them about 4 months ago.

Actually I find it's a lot easier to get electrical stuff these days than it was 30 years or more ago. More stores stock more parts, ebay is also good IME for most elctrical items, and there are also lots of online shops both here and overseas which offer all sorts of electrical parts for the classic car market.

Be careful buying this chinese wire, some of it is size rated by the diameter of the plastic insulation (not mm² of the copper conductors inside).

i don't have a commercial interest but Jay Dee is a specialist wire supplier and has all of the lucas combinations in pvc. For cloth covered you need to go to Long Island in the US.A harness maker here may supply you a small quantity. My Marcos harness is being made this week and we are using about 50 different colour combinations. I even had to go to a tube radio supplier in the US to get an additional 6 different colours in 22 gage!
