Post subject:  me again. where to find chassis number?

on a 1969 Mini K.

we are after the engine and chassis number...

we have these 2 numbers on rego papers...

Engine number is 99H791P-118659

VIN number is YG25112021

have I got this right and where is the chassis number :)

This is the chassis number that you need, except it is YG2S112021

You will find the chassis number stamped into the top of the radiator shroud on the passenger side wing.

thanks guys... so the 5 is actually an S. cool, that matches what a Mini K body should have.

so the engine doesn't match though.... any ideas what the engine comes from as it does not seem to be a Mini engine??

It's from a 998 Clubby, my guess around 1975-1976.

Are you sure the chassis number isn't YG2S1/2021 rather than 12021? 'Cos my K is a '70 (plated) YG2S1/6*** and I doubt they'd number things in reverse order. (Although given some of the things I've heard about Leyland through this place, I wouldn't be surprised if they did....)

I doidn't think about this but you are right, a '69 would be in the region of 2021 :oops:

ok guys, now I am confused.... the numbers we gave you are correct so does this mean there is something wrong?

the mechanic involved in the restoration (in 2006/2007) said this about the engine:

wat I was told its a 998 block whith 1100 (1098) rods and pistons, crank shaft this is pretty common as the 998 block is easier to find they are basically the same engine the cylinder head is the 1100 head as well as the gear box is a 1100 (syncroniser on 1st gear)

does this sound about right?

Ok, forget about what the rego papers say and just look at the number stamped in the radiator shroud.

Look really carefully and I "think" you will find the second 1 in the number is actually a /

Check it out and let us know what you find :)

Yes, the only real difference between an 998 and a 1098 are the crank and pistons, so it could well be a 998 converted to a 1098. You would have to measure the stroke to be certain.

Yes, the only real difference between an 998 and a 1098 are the crank and pistons, so it could well be a 998 converted to a 1098. You would have to measure the stroke to be certain.

You can check this by putting #1 piston on TDC. Get a pencil or something, stick it down the hole as vertical as possible and mark the top of the plug thread on it. Repeat for #2 cylinder without moving the crank.
Difference between the 2 marks = stroke.
998 = 76.2mm
1098 = 83.7mm

Difference on a stock motor = about 8HP and 8 ft/lb torque, in favour of the 1098. Well worth having for a road car. 8)
