Post subject:  Converting hydro suspension to dry type

Greetings All
Can somebody tell me: If i want to convert from wet to dry suspension, it is as simple as removing the wet components and fitting the dry ones and they all fit without any further mods ,or have i got it wrong and if so how do i do it

Cheers Barrca

Although complete dry sub-frames ready to be overhauled pop up fairly regularly for next to nothing so Id just get a set of those.

as I say every time someone asks this, WHY :?

IMHO hydro is sooo much better than dry unless you want to put it on the track. The best use of donuts is eating them

Soo true and Hydro can even be made to handle on the track, although with a little more difficulty than rubber.

What he said ^^^

I had 1 of each, the dry one had Konis all round, but the hydro one (+ front shocks) handled better, particularly on our usual dodgy road surfaces.
And the hydro still has original bags, lines, and knuckle joints in it.
[edit] I grease all the knuckles once a year with a grease needle]

Although it is possible to convert the hydro subframes to dry, I'd recommend picking up some complete dry front and rear subframes and swapping the whole lot. That way you can build everything up out of the car, where everything is a bit easier to get at.

Just note this method tends to be more expensive, one thing leads to another and suddenly you've replaced half the car 'given you've got it apart anyway'

well,,, as much as i love hydro (& i really do) but truth be known--> there are sooooo many brand new replacement hydro bags "floating" around (Pun intended) cheap as chips,,, they`re everywhere,,, there`s actually an over abundance of brand new good quality cheap & affordable hydro bags in every corner store

aren`t there???

oh!!!

they`re not???

oh & the 2nd hand ones are "drying" up (another pun also intended)

oh!!!

so they`re getting harder & harder to find good ones????

oh!!! maybe that could be a problem sooner rather than later yeah???

oh , i`m not quite sure,,, should we ring around all the mini wreckers & ask if they have some???

what`s that you say???,,, there`s hardly any mini wreckers wrecking any minis any more??? oh dear !!!

i`m sorry for the sark-chasm :-) :-) :-)

my "special-soft" hi-los work very similar to a hydro car :-) True!!!

but sorry, out of stock atm, new batch being made early 2103 maybe feb or march,,, doing hundreds of them this time :-) i will probly do a """Matt`s birthday special""" on them if they`re done by march :-)

or,,,, maybe.... would someone like to foot the bill for me to have a few thousand new hydro bags made in China???

it`s totally do-able,,, i already have done the footwork & have plans in place--> just will cost a little bit :-)

.

btw,,, that little bit i was talking about = """A Fortune"""

:-)

Haha ^^^
Well y'all, just don't throw your old bags away, the hoses (which is the common old age fail point) can be replaced.

Here's one I repaired earlier-

Is there any particular reason that no-one is making repro parts for the hydro's ???

Money. It would cost a heck of a lot of money to recreate the tooling to make new hydro displacers.

New tooling for the displacers (originals were made by Dunlop, here in Oz anyway) would cost a bomb.
The steel pipes are less a problem, Pirtek could bend some up and re-use the original fittings (I had no joy finding new, which are 5/8 UNF).
You can also get a pipe kit from Minispares, it uses 2 lengths copper pipe and quick connect push-fit airline fittings to join them in the middle...

& yes ,,, well,,, 2103,,, may seem a long way off i suppose,,, would you reckon some people might want them a tad earlier than that maybe ??? :-)

everyones in a damn rush these days :-)

ok, make it next year then,,, crickey,,, the things i do :-)
