Hi

Just a question that i have never known the answer to but often wondered about.

Did all Australian minis come with front seatbelts?

I have heard real early ones didnt have them but havent ever seen one without them. I have seen in Brittish mags that some didnt have them.

Just curious..

Thanks
Brenton

Early 850's didnt as standard.

My 62 doesn't. Has the holes in the b-pillar for them but blanked off with a plastic grommet.

It was sometime after 1965 that they became compulsory.
I got wrapped round a tree in late `65 and we had no seatbelts then.

So before 65 they were not factory standard even though they were not compulsory.

So every mini made before 65 had seatbelts either retrofitted afterwoods or dealer optioned?

So if i wanted to i could buy a mini made before 65 and pull the front seatbelts out and still have it legal?.....

No........
All Minis sold here before 1965 and after have standard front mounts from the factory.
If factory mounts exist you must run belts these days. So, you will have to run front belts, even if they were not in the car when built.

November 1969 in vic they became compulsary for every passenger seated next to an opening door, I think we were the first in the world to make them law.

I have a mate up this way that done up an FJ and he didn't fit belts to it , as it didn't have any to start with .

He and his wife were out on there usual Sunday cruise , when 2 young fella's in a Torana failed to stop at a T intersection and the mate couldn't avoid t-boning them .

All i'll say is that there were 4 very badly injured people , and 2 Wrecked cars .
After visiting my mate and his wife in hospital , and seeing how knocked about they were , my advice would be , don't take the risk .

Yeah, I remember it was somewhere around then that we did get them.

We were early to get belts - compulsory - compared to the rest of the world, in fact I do know that they had them in Sweden in the early 60's and it was though a car accident that an Engineer who was involved with the Snowy Mountain's Hydro Scheme had, whilst in Sweden that we did get them here. On his return and subsequent report, the accident was mentioned and a it was discussed. After that, seat belt became compulsory for all vehicles working on the Snowy Scheme, it cut the injury and fatality rate quite a bit. The state authorities took notice and well, the rest is history.

Ummmmmm not to mention Dr Michael Henderson for his efforts with road and racing cars...

My early '65 did not have seatbelts fitted when I put it through rego and it passed fine.

I fitted them before the end of the day though. Seems a strange thing to voluntarily do without
