Alright I know this question is abit like a how longs a piece of string question... But I just want a rough estimate...

So I have a complete 1275 (1100S with the small journal crank and S rods) I brought it off one of dads old mates from the mini club awhile back. I will give abit of a back story on the motor so you can answer the question better.

8 years back my old man and his mate John Rayner brought a clubman with a 1275 in it basically just to do Khanas and what not. The motor was really strong was just smokey(valve guide seals) and went hard never missed a beat. Anyway 5 years ago the car was parked outside and not touched untill 6 months ago when I purchased it.

I want to get the motor rebuilt but don't really know what it will cost to do so. Basically just want it to go nothing to special maybe a quick bore and new pistons and a bit of a beefier cam. I just want a reliable motor.

If I was to say go to a engine rebuilder what do you think it would cost me? Maybe someone on here has had a motor rebuilt recently.

I'd say somewhere between 3k -- 4k .

Sounds similar to my rebuild.

Bored to 1330
New pistons etc
Lighten and balance flywheel etc
New pump
New timing chain
New cam

Cost me about 3k

That didn't include the box.

Do it yourself man you know your way around these things enough to have a crack at it.. Get the ultimate mini engine builder DVD and away you go!

even if you do it yourself, it will still cost you 2/3 of the estimate above, maybe more.

I'm all for having a crack yourself, I just didn't want you to think it's going to cost $1000 if you did.

this depends if you want everything replaced or just a freshen up
basic freshen ups are
hone the bores new piston rings
new big end and main bearings, new cam bearings, lifters, oil pump , timing set, gaskets and a valve job
@ 800 - 2000
if u go to the next stage u will be boring the block fitting new pistons and rings
machining the crank and balancing the bottom end, close and hone con rods, fit arp rod bolts, machine the deck of the block and head, fitting new valves, rockers ect

depends on what parts you buy and who is doing the work a complete rebuilt engine can be 3k to 7k , but think of this as a 10 year plus investment if you do it right

or u can buy a twinky or something else

You'd want to give the box a once over while you're at it at least a new diff pin, might need a layshaft etc so from between $500-$1500 for a box depending on condition.

I'd say $4.5K-5K all up to budget for things that may need replacing - if it comes in under well you're in front then

Just dont do like me, think yes I can have a crack at it (with no mechanical experience at all). Spend the money doing it, make a complete dogs breakfast of it and have to pay someone to do the job again properly. An expensive lesson to learn!

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You really need to ask someone actually able to do the work how much they would charge.

You don't need a Mini specialist - any competent engine specialist should (would) be perfectly able to redo a Mini - they're not difficult. And they may well be cheaper than a Mini shop. My last two engines were done by local engine shops and they both work well.
