ok im getting really tired and annoyed with the twins on my mini atm.. so ive decided to make life easier by switch to a single carb ![]() question is what to use on a 1275 im thinking of doing some head work and cam to.. alot of people say webber others say su 13/4.. id like to know if anyone has used both and what they though were the big differences between the two besides the obvious.. are webers really that great? what size webber do you use? are the 1 3/4 roughly the same as the 1.5 but just bigger? any help or advice would be great thanks as id like to make my decision soon. |

They both can give around the same power on a road car with good manifolds. On the 1412 stroker I got 113.6HP with a 1-3/4 SU (GR manifold), and 114HP with a 45 Dellorto (ported Redline manifold). However the SU made 113ft/lb torque and the Dellorto only made 108. So there ya go... As it's for the wife's van, it's getting the SU. ![]() An HS6 SU is the same size as an HS4, just a bigger hole thru it and a square manifold flange not oval. An HIF44 SU is taller and has clearance problems underneath on a GR manifold. |

![]() SU for girly cars yes. Both carbs are good, and if the Weber is jetted right (most are made too rich for road use) economy isn't that bad either. It depends whether you can put up with the Weber's noise/music. I can... ![]() If the noise pisses you off, get an SU. |

I chucked my solex in favor of a HIF44.. I had it installed and tuned with no dyno run on Thursday and i can say it's heaps better and quieter. I could probably squeeze more power out of it if it was dyno tuned. |

There's more to it than just which carb... Firstly, what manifolds are you able to get a hold of? This will seriously effect power. For instance, running 1 3/4 SU on one of GR's manifolds will always be considerably better than running 45mm sidedraft on a stock Redline manifold. Reverse is true too running an optimum manifold (read 4.5 or 5 inch) on a 45mm sidedraft will be better than running a 1 3/4 SU on a stock manifold, but that will mean considerable space issues (firewall cutting). Then it would be a matter of porting too. Figure out what the carb is going to be mounted on, and how before selecting the type. Go with the best setup, if that happens to be a well ported Redline manifold then go with 45mm sidedraft. If you can get a hold of a good SU manifold whether it's twins or single, then go with that. The absolute difference in 1 3/4 SU versus 45mm sidedraft is negligible compared to what manifold gear you are bolting them to. I am almost certain I can get the exact same HP from a properly setup HIF44 that I am getting on my 45 Dellorto, but I love the Dellorto sound too much... |

I recently fitted a HIF44 on a minispares manifold and a K&N filter on a stock 1275 and it drives great, fitted with a BDK needle. motor is stock and getting lazy but still drives well. Grant |

We put an HS6 with Ramflo/Unifilter & stock Minispares manifold on a 1370 stroker (RE83 cam and 1.3 rockers). With a nearly stock Mk2S valved head, it made 102HP/99lb/ft torque on the engine dyno. Needle was a KV (fixed) one. |

Semi related topic: just how long can you go (inlet) with both an HIF44, and a 45 sidie, without hacking he firewall? I see a lot of people recommending very long inlets, but there seems to be a lot of people running big motors in standard (appearance) cars, so just wondering how much of a trade off they're making..... |
