Post subject:  Steering arm bolt length please?

Hi folks,
Does anyone know the length of disc hub steering arm bolts please?
Also I'm assuming they are just a regular 3/8" UNF grade 8 bolt?
Thanks a lot.
Matt

I just found one to pull out of the hub.

They are high tensile (9/16AF) 3/8 x 1 1/4 UNF.

I'm going to check this myself. I thought they were 1.5" at least.
Reason is the arm, dowel and lock tab are 1" high combined.

Interesting. I just measured my Metro steering arm bolts, and they're a freckle over 1.5" long. Mind you, they're metric, and into a different hub, so doesn't really reflect what the proper mini ones should be.

Maybe, I took the hub out and again checked the bolt. Took a photo for a sanity check. So 1 1/4 it is.

The bolt is one of the depressed head bolts the uk manufacturers used so I feel its the original bolt. Minisport claim on the site they used the same bolt for all models across all years too. Combined height fitted up is 3/4. The shank is a shade under 3/4.

My drum hubs have 1.5" bolts in them. Don't have any disc hubs at hand yet.
Easy to tell if they're that length as the end of the bolt is only about 3mm below the surface on the unside of the hub where the holes go through.

General engineering rule of thumb for bolts into steel or cast material is to go 1.5-2 diameters deep into the hole.
In this case, with a 1.5" long bolt there is 1/2" engagement - a suitable amount for a 3/8 thread.
The shorter bolt only has about 1/4" engagement - easily at risk of stripping or coming loose even with a lock tab.

Well that's odd. These were from a Cooper S disc brake hub if there's any difference there. If a bigger one fits than there's no harm in that.

I've checked all four now, and they're the same on this set. I might pull one on the Cooper S later as well. I can't see inside the hubs to see how far they go through to the inside of the hub, but remember them coming up just about flush, too far and they'll just clash with the CV .

Let me know what you find if you get your hands on a disc hub you can see inside.

Seems you've got some short bolts Mick - not cool! When I posted I thought the answer would be 1.5" or 1.75".... Thanks to all who have contributed.
