Post subject:  Moving from NZ to NSW - Hoping to bring B16a2 Mini
Hi Guys,

There is a high chance that next year I will be moving to NSW Australia, and I am just trying to find out some information about importing a vehicle from New Zealand.

I have a 1979 Layland 1275GT Mini, NZ New, which I have modified and installed a Honda B16a2 engine, plus a handful of other more 'normal' mini modifications.

My mini has been certified and on the road since mid 2009. I am just trying to find out if I can import it to Ausi and if I can get it certified and get it on the road.

Does anyone know much about this process?

I am hoping that since its all legal and certified in NZ that it will be ok in Ausi too, but I have heard some states don't like imports or modified vehicles, but I haven't found the information to back that up yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

The certification process is quite extensive, and I assume Ausi would have a similar sort of process, but I just don't know of how I even go about starting to find out if I can bring the mini, what checks need to be done, or if its a big fat NO from the start.

Any help would be kindly appreciated.

Cant help with the import information , but looking at your website now and i must say fantastic work on your mini .

And making your own dash out of polystyrene plus the other bibs and bobs is just a fantastic idea " has it held up over time ?" looks great and a unique approach in my book to making a dash.

Well done and i will look through your other pictures just to see if you have any more surprises.

Was a very satisfying build from day 1, learnt a hell of a lot and was extremely satisfied the first time I put gas it in and pressed the starter and it roared into life.

Yeah the dash was fun to make, and it is lasting really well. Because the Mini is black, and the dash is black, it gets rather hot. 2 little cracks have appeared on the dash in fairly hidden locations, so overall not bad really. Another coat of fibreglass would have sorted that I reckon. Such is life, but overall very happy with how it turned out - far from perfect though.

In terms of importing, I can get the car over there no problem, will cost a few thousand sadly, but I can get it in the country. Its more the getting it on the road and being able to drive it part that has me worried.

There's a thread here somewhere about a bloke who brought a Mini from UK with a Toyota twincam in it. Despite the WIDE track, it's now registered in WA.
You would need to get it engineered when it gets here, but I think NSW rules are less stringent than your NZ ones (I'm thinking of all the 4EFTE powered Minis here, most of which have very dodgy front subframe design).

Thanks - that is encouraging to hear then.

In regards to modified vehicles on the road in Ausi, if its registered/certified/legal in one state, can you drive to another state and still be legal? We don't have states here.

ie, if you cannot get a modified car registered on the road in say Queensland for whatever reason (just an example), so decided to live in NSW instead and could get it on the road legally, can you then drive it in Queensland if its registered in NSW (say if you are on holiday) and all is good?

If you register the car in one state (NSW) you are allowed to drive it in another (QLD). But if you become a permanent resident of QLD you would need to change the rego to QLD

NSW but includes a blue one that recent went to Qld.
I'm not saying properly engineered [read: DESIGNED] frames don't exist but I've yet to see one here in NSW.
Most down here have had the whole RH side of the subby cut out then a bit of RHS dropped from above to take the front tie bar mount. Even with a diagonal brace above the engine, they flex and break. Bigbad's even cracked the RH wing....
People forget that if you have 200HP ATW, 100 of it has to go through that poor RH mount hanging in the breeze. If it flexes your castor on that side has changed, = torque steer, cracking etc.
It needs a brace bar run forward from below. If that means a dry sump system or a tube welded through the sump to clear the bar, so be it.
Might as well throw the old subby away and start with a clean sheet of paper; put coilovers on instead of the rubber cones, then there's no need for thin & flimsy tube towers with bits of tube hung off them..
