What are you using for coolant? It might be fine.

Coolants run at a hotter temperature than straight water - if its a factory gauge there may not be an issue.
If its outright getting to hot then there could be an issue.

Test the water temp with a thermometer in the top tank whilst it's warming up. Check it out against your gauge.
It's usually not really HOT until it hits the HOT mark. 1cm off it is probably no problem.

82 is pretty bog standard, i run 74 deg ones in mine up here, you have to if you want to drive them daily or long distances. Some will argue you can use a 82 up here, but they drive like grandma's at 70km phr on the highway..

makes a huge difference for me. I believe 74 is the coolest one they make. Can take a bit of looking to find one to suit the mini in that temperature, if you cant find one, I can get one up here from my supplier for you.

Use your infered thermometer and pull over when your car gauge is peeking and point your infered at the head..if its not above 100deg your fine. Anything much more than 100 is something to worry about. My race car at lakeside last weekend saw 112deg so your fine buddy :)
