Post subject: | Subframe Mounting ? |
just a quick question, when i pulled my moke subframe out it had two long bolts sticking up out the top of each tower for the mounts however my modified subframe doesnt have any bolt. does that mean its the centre bolt type ? and if so, will the Moke crossmember need a reinforcing plate since it was designed for the 2 bolt type ? There were 3 top mounting systems: each side- 2x studs with nuts 2x bolts 1x BIG bolt (and rubber mounts between subframe and body). The big bolt was only used on UK subframes from ~1976 on, so we never got them here. Unless your modified subby is out of a Rover.. Yes if you want to mount a single bolt subby in an Oz Mini or Moke, the centre hole needs a tube in there for reinforcement. |

Shouldn't be hard. Remove the studs from the old frame with either 2x 5/16 unf nuts on the top or multigrips of you must, then tap the holes in the subframe out 3/8 unf and put the studs in - I'd suggest a thin smear of copper grease to stop it rusting, not that you'd have that problem up there. Captive plate on the top and some new 5/16 nuts and you're done. Second thoughts - see if you can get some long 3/8 bolts to fit. They'd be better suited to your upgrade. |

Bolts are a better idea, they come out- whereas the 4 studs often get bent when you drop the subby down. |

the two bolts seem to be fixed to a plate which is wedged between the inside of the tower and the round plate that the the rubber cones sit in |

Yes they are studs ie, they have a thread on the other end so get yourself a stud extractor or use two nuts as Harley said an get them out and fit them into the other frame. |

Or, just get 4 of the right bolts and use these. Mini King probably has some still. Oz Minis used both systems, I'm not sure what the split was, studs vs bolts. Mini King's parts book shows both bolts and studs were used on dry suspension and hydro, on Mini and Moke. |

I tried to put bolts in my car but the crush tubes wouldn't allow them to fit. Either the tubes were too small, or they were too close together. |
