Has anyone ever taken the original paint off one of these and repainted it again?
I'm trying to work out if I'll only make it look worse by trying to restore it.
The intention would be to remove the flakey paint on the unit wilth something that won't
fog the plastic, put some new translucent red paint (or another colour if I'm game) on and hit
it with the chrome again behind that.
Any thoughts or experiences?

Try it with a shittier one to see if it turns out any good.
If its ruined, it won't matter as much then;
If its wonderful, do the better one

That's what I'll do. My other one is all cracked through the plastic.
This one is pretty good, so don't want to touch it yet.

Something a little strange is going on a t Somerford minis, I tried to buy a badge from them some time back, did so and waited. After a two week wait they emailed me to say that the fellow who does them has departed for parts unknown with the original tooling and plans...
Give them a go, but I think they are having a bit of a crisis with the badges they make at the moment.

Yep me too. Tooling not available, supplier disappeared. They would have been good for only a bit over 8 pound each though!!

There is a guy on ebay in england that sells them with the surround for about 20 pounds or so. But the silver M already looks Gold, so who knows the quality?

Makes the old ones in good nick even rarer!

I was going to try this using a metallic red paint. Let me know how you go, and if I have any luck in the meantime, I will let you know too!

Any spraypainters out there got some advice?

Just my $0.05, but I like the patina of older parts. As long as it's in keeping with the rest of the vehicle, slightly worn bits are okay in my book - it's an old car, and that patina represent the history of the car. I fitted a new 13" steering wheel, and the original wheel centre fitted the new wheel - I like it a lot.

Grave dig. I tried removing the paint, except it isn't paint. It's vaccum metalized. To reproduce the effect you would have to cast/injection mould a clear blank, paint on a translucent red then get it re-metalized. You would ruin the internal surfaces removing the "chrome"

Repro ones are available (on and off).
