Hi All

I am planning on going to have a look at this mini. http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Automotiv ... P005212278
Can I please have some hints and tips on what to look out for.
I like the fact that it is already in primer. I'm a mechanic so I like the mechanical work but not so much the body work.

If you want a project it would be an excellent start.
You could get a decent runner for not much more though.

I was thinking the same thing. I tried calling him, but no answer so I sent him an e-mail.

I found a few nice runners for a little more but they all seem to need work. I was hoping no to pay the asking price.......

My thought with this was at least I started with a good body and can choose my color. Hopefully it's mechanically pretty good I think I would look at the disc brake front in it.

Body condition aside, I think it's risky business if not all the bits and pieces are there. It could end up costing you a packet buying bracket X and seal Y to complete the car because it's missing.

It would be less risky (and as said not much more money) to buy a complete runner, especially since you are going to do all the mechanicals anyway. Just my thoughts

The good news is that it is not a Mini S, it is actually an LS....reasonably rare now!

The wheels and spotlights in the grill are original. If it was me, I would keep it original as they did not make that many of them. The light metallic blue when fresh looks great also!

Keep in mind that primer is good at hiding minor dents and bits of bog that will show up once the paint is applied. It can make a body shell that's pretty rough look awesome in photos.

I found that out the hard way with my first project Mini.

I reckon the asking price is a bit optimistic unless it actually has a 1275 in there. But each to their own. :)

Welcome Surtess nice to have another Geelongite here :-) that mini looks ok from the pictures a bit pricey but who knows you might just have to put it all togther and thats it , he does mention having all the pieces to complete the project offer $2000 qnd see how it goes.

Just keep an eye on ebay and justcars etc if you dont get that one , also in the events section we have the Geelong eating club were we meet up in a random spot in the city and have a feed ..... great for a chat.

Lillee is on the money for sure , i have a mate that has just done a full resto on what was originally a bare shell , i would hate to imagine what he has spent buying this bit & that bit to get the car complete .
The other option if you end up buying this car is if you can get hold of a donor car for the right price .

Harley has a valid point too , in that for a bit more money you could get a rego'ed runner
that you could drive straight away and tinker with as you go .

Thanks Everyone for the feed back, this is why I asked I thought it was a little pricey.
I differently wouldn't buy it sight unseen but that being said I also wouldn't know if everything was there.

I saw this one and it grab my interest, but yes finishing off someone else project after they pulled it apart is also a concern.

MinBill thanks for the welcome I am watching that one you posted I asked him about the body condition and this was the reply "
little rust front of bonnet, bottom of boot lid and a near rear gaurd joint, all under the paint. Ta" so I think it doesn't sound like too bad a body but you never quiet know whats hiding.
I'll also have to check the events section out.

Yeah you never know whats hiding is right , when i picked up my mini " links in my sig " it looked really good but after stripping the paint off the boot it was full of bog and spray putty so be careful and remember these are very old cars so some rust is inevitable.

So the first mini you posted says the body has been professionally finished might be a good one , but $2750 seems high for a project simply because the bits he shows came off the car , fine for the metal bits but you would have to imagine at least new rubber all round " windows , seals etc " but have at look at it get a rough idea of what it needs and bargain him down , start low and try meet in the middle , pick you max price and let him know your prepared to walk away " been watching wheeler dealers on foxtel lol " .

Also its in 2pac primer so are you painting it yourself ? or paying for it to be done " huge dollars $200-3000 ? " , and you cant spray 2pac at home " tis very very poisonous and is absorbed through skin " so acyrllic it will have to be " which im pretty sure ive read can be sprayed over 2k primer " the guys here will know " .

Check out the mini spares web sites to get an idea what you may be up for in spare parts and the wanted section here or ebay is you friend for spares etc.

And i must not forget Dr mini is an encyclopedia of knowledge on mini's as are many members here " Dr Mini even gives part numbers so he has top billing :-) , its a great place to be if like me your new to mini restoration.

Be patient and grab the mini that sound good to you.

Don't wort about the novel it is ask good information I'm new to the mini world, but I grew old up around fords and Valiants. So I know you are always going to find something that you didn't want to find in an old car.

I was planning on spending sometime on ebay and searching the web to try and add up cost from things like new rubbers, carpet, disc brake conversation. I have been looking through old threads and there us some great knowledge here and yes dr mini is a wealth of information.

The body being professionally done is what I like but I planned on taking a magnet with me when I had a look. I haven't decided about painting it but I was thinking of having a try of it myself. I've never painted a car but I have used a already gun for a range of other things.

I will definitely be bargaining price

Engine number as posted on the gumtree ad (99H...) is def a 998 & not 1275.

This is an interesting way to properly estimate the cost (and a very good way to carry out a restoration)

It may seem like a good idea to replace everything but good secondhand parts are cheaper and will get you on the road sooner, just do your homework and ask questions, look in person (too many people have been burnt from painted parts hiding cracks and damage)

When you buy it take stock of what you have, what is good and what is junk. Then budget. And add 10k to what ever figure you arrive at :lol:
