Hi there gurus and friends.

If you needed to rebuild a power unit you would always rebuild the gearbox. Thats a given.

But if the PU was ok and the gearbox had issues, could you do just the gearbox?

My 4th gear bearing set seems to be a bit iffy so a rebuild is in its future but if the PU is good I'd like to delay a rebuild..

Off to sunny Mackay for work today.. Have a great day everyone..

I can see no reason why you couldn't just fix or rebuild the gearbox without touching the engine (except for changing the relevant gaskets; coolant etc as you are going to have to pull the engine out, to split the gearbox off for rebuild).

You may want to consider what jobs might be opportunistic on the engine whilst it is out however without rebuilding it - such as cleaning and painting the engine?; new water pump; new oil pump etc?

yes you could just do the box "IF" the donk is good , yes

i always (while i`m there) have a little boo-peep at the oil pump & at least gork at the center main bearing to make sure it`s all hunky-dory :-)

Of its still in one piece why not flush the oil to was any crap out of the galleys? I've heard of methods using diesel oil (more detergents) and there are probably products you could buy.

I am hoping the donk is good Matt. A bloke in the know  said its got more poke than standard so I am hoping its still in good nick.

Besides if the donk has the cam the said bloke in the know  indicated it might, the donk might have had a reasonably recent rebuild anyway..

I'll catch up with the bloke in the know  again soon anyway to have a chat about it, probably when he does the carby extra bits for me :D
