Hi all, I purchased a mini for restoration about 8 years ago and as it happens it has just sat at mum and dads for the past 8 years:) (got as far as doing the subframes). I'm at the stage where I'm just going to send it off to a panel shop for completion.
I believe it is a 68 but was just wondering if someone can shed some light on it. The problem I have is there is no identification plate (which I believe the mini's of this era didn't have) and the only identification number i can find is on the radiator shroud and is very difficult to read. I initially scrapped back the paint to identify the last four digits when I got it. But I didn't realise there were characters in front of the 4 larger digits. The previous owner had it for over 10 years as a resto project and never had it registered as well.
As far as I can tell it's a morris 1100, the numbers I can make out on the body are YG**2556 I can't seem to work out what the asterisks are (they could be 2 or S and the engine number begins with 10yctah3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'd hate to spend a decent amount of money on it only to face issues getting it registered.

Welcome to Ausmini!
I had recent issues at rego, and this thread proved interesting and informative.

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=79871

I would think the type is YG2S2, and you'll be looking for a five digit body number. Look behind where the master cylinder reservoirs live - this is where the chassis plate lives (if the car had one from factory), and the body number is stamped underneath. Should be there, even if it's not easy to see behind layers of paint.

What are some of the key identifiers? ie right hand tank? flat wiper holes, or pressed?

More photos would be interesting to see.

Matt

The YG**2556 is probably YG2S1 2556 which is the Mini K.
The engine prefix would be 10YC/Ta/H which is the Mini K.
I bet the number after the prefix starting with 3 is four digits long. And I think it is very close to being 500 higher than the car number.

The 69 Mini K didn't come with an ID plate or a Compliance plate.

In the gutter at the back of the bonnet will be stamped a body number. It will be very hard to read. It will be about 500 lower than the Car number.

Did body number go from 5 digits to 4 with introduction of Mini K? (Except for Cooper S, which I believe was always 4?)

The car numbers start at 501, so three digits, then four, then five.

The Cooper S car numbers only made it to four digits because they never made enough to reach five, but the first one was still 501.

Body numbers start at 1. But you are not supposed to see them!

Engine numbers start at 1001.

Hi all, I had a look today and had no luck. I scraped some of the paint in the areas circled and couldn't see anything. I also had a look on other areas of the firewall and there was nothing that stood out. Am I looking in the correct locations?

Thanks

You need to look in the gutter above the wiper motor, between the hinge and the bit of rag in your photo. T
here should be a four digit number and also a code like M2 05.

Thanks for the replies. So I need to look where I have marked it in red? I had a look along the gutter and there wasn't anything clear because the paint is very thick all the way along. I'll hit it with some paint stripper to see whats behind there. Womble99 the rocker cover will come up a treat after a polish:)
