Hi All,

I'm looking at upgrading my carb form the standard 1 1/4" to something that will best suit my engine.

I have a standard 998 and I'm not sure whether to go for a single 1 1/5", twin 1 1/4" or bigger.

Any suggestions?

I also have a standard exhaust system but looking at getting something bigger in the future.

Check out the link in my footer if you want to see the car.

Hi 68Wagon,

The choice is yours, If it's a standard 998 I probably wouldn't go any bigger than twin 1 1/4's. I would prefer a single 1 1/2 on a nice intake manifold, that way you only have a single SU to look after! Also probably cheaper than twin SU's

There will be some appreciable gains but not as much as if you changed the exhaust at the same time.

If you change carbs you will need to tune it to get the right needle in it, then when you change exhaust, this will need to be done again. It would probably be an easier exercise to do both at the same time to see a much more appreciable gain.

Beware also that some exhaust manifolds won't fit under some intake manifolds. But the stock exhaust should be fine on most manifolds.

For a standard 998 I'm just guessing

1.5" carby jetted correctly & cone filter .. Wouldn't bother with the twins as they'll have same power but more difficult to setup.

Something other than stock intake manifold

Perry extractors

1 3/4 Exhaust ... At most ... Mayb too big

Whatever u decide do all at same time so carby is tuned correctly for ur exhaust setup.

Edit : dam Chong beat me to it.

Thanks Lillee and Fiji for the advice.

I'll defeintely look at a single 1 1/2" carb - Don't want to make it too complex especially if there's no benefit! :D

As for the exhaust I was looking at getting a custom extractors/exhaust sytem done by Exhaust Bros in Geelong. Am I better off buying perry extractors and getting a 1 3/4" exhaust custom made?

I'll obviously need an intake manifold too as I currently have the orginal cast manifold.

Suggestions on the intake manifold?

Hey mate custom sounds expensive when you could get it done fairly low cost getting the suitable parts from members on here. If it were a hot race motor mayb be an option... Then again I'd still not send it to get custom done id be hitting up the likes of the miniman , GR , Greig Mini Classic.

Just hang off it for a couple of days U should get more good advice from others on here & the parts should be easily obtained . eBay / for sale section.

Cheers.

1.75HS6 on a Minispares manifold with a MED filter/stub stack.
OA6 needle to start with.
Don't listen to those that say it's too big, crap they work just fine on a 998.

Thanks mate, I'm not in any rush. I mainly want to figure out what parts to get and the most effective/bang for buck way of making the upgrade.

The reason I was thinking a custom exhaust is because I have a wagon and although I love straight through exhaust, I also want to get a tow bar fitted (which may also need to be custom made) because I also have a trailer I'm fixing.

If I could get away with buying off the shelf and the price is right, I'll certainly do it.

Much appreciated advice from both of you :)

For a standard 998, i would go wilth a single 1.5 su, water heated inlet manifold, maniflow LCB extractors. (give lindsay @ minis plus a call & see, he may have a full system available to suit the extractors that you can fit up yourself). Otherwise, depending on your location, will depend on where you get the rest of your exhaust made . . . if your down geelong way speak to someone from down there ( poeee, Mick, etc . . . ) as to where to get it made/fitted.

Sure a 1 3/4" would work .... You'd just have to jet it down to supply the correct amount of fuel. Same results from a 1 1/2 " ... But would be a little cheaper.

If you were ever thinking of going bigger engine wise later on perhaps 1 3/4" is a good option. Currently I have a 1 3/4" on my 1275.
