Post subject:  Oil Slinger Chain Clearance

I'm just reassembling the 998 Cooper engine, and have noticed this while putting the timing gears back on.

The oil slinger has pressed against the timing chain on assembly and then machined themselves a clearing tolerance. The F for front is correctly facing towards the radiator. I suppose this is easy enough to sort with some large shims, but did I miss a part on assembly, or is this an odd issue?

The timing gears and chain are a rollmaster adjustable set.

I've found another slinger in my collection that I had zinc plated a while back. Its a different pressing altogether and doesn't come close to the chain like the other one. So it looks like a case-by-case basis for the slingers.

Seeing as it's stripped that metal out is it worth putting the chain and gears off and giving them a good clean just to make sure their is no metal rubbish in between all the links and stuff?

That chewed up one is an early slinger for a simplex chain. Don't use them for a duplex. The later slingers as you found have less set in them, and just clear duplex. These are the ones to use.

Anybody tried to run a chain without it? I wouldn't think the oil level in there is high enough to need one.. and modern seals work better than the 1953 A series originals.

I pulled the chain off in any case and gave it a good clean in the part cleaner with everything else.

I reckon I have found the reason the oil pump went out of tolerance...at least the oil filter did its job..

I think the oil seal does enough work with the slinger in place as it is, especially once the seal gets few years old. Anything which actively keeps oil away from it is definitely my friend I reckon
