| Post subject: | rear hydro helper springs and struts |
Other than getting used helper springs which are probably as bad as the originals, is there any other option with shagged rear helpers, can they be re-set, if so, by whom? Is it possible to lower the rear of the car by cutting x amount off the reat strut? any idea how the car might lower by cutting say 1/4 inch (6mm) thanks John |

There are spring makers in Oz still who could make you a pair slightly shorter, or maybe shorten the ones you have. What colour are they, the later stronger ones were orange. More than likely the front bags have sagged a bit (they are still a rubber cone, with a bladder inside). Rather than cut the rear struts I'd be putting a 3-5mm washer on the front knuckles. |

There are two different length springs, ( overall length ) however any you may find, I would think would be second hand, so would be a concern to You I agree with Dr Kev I do not think your problem is with the springs |

Thank you for your responses. The whole front and rear end have been rebuilt using new components. I got a pair of used rear bags for the front. I have my own new hydrolastic pump. At present the car measures 17" from the bottom of the rim to the fender lip on the front and 18 1/2" at the rear, with 300lbs pressure. I put a .20" washer at the left hand front, same pressure, still the same height. (although the rear on the other side went up 1/4") I got a spare rear rod and cut 1/4" off it, it didn't make any difference either ??? Doesn't make sense does it. |

John, Did you drive the car between making each change? I'm not expert on the hydro stuff, but I wonder if the car needs to settle a bit between jobs. It would only need to go around the block, but to my mind that would do a lot for letting the car adopt its own natural attitude. Matt |

My car sits pretty level for a 43 year old hydro, but I have S/GT bags in the front and original Minimatic/Mini K ones in the rear. |

John Try pumping it up higher and see if it levels out a bit more with the extra tension on the rear spings just a thought Mark |

I found that there are different length cast spacers in different bags. The cast spacer being the piece in the bottom of the bag that the knuckle joint fits into. The top of the spacer fits into the rubber base of the bag. This was when comparing some Mk2 S bags to some original deluxe ones and some others of unknown origin. From memory the difference in length was several (maybe 5) millimeters. |
