| Post subject: | What type of flares |
I currently have what I believe are the plastic Inocenti flares on my mini but I am thinking of changing them. Would appreciate it if anyone had a photo of their flares they could provide with a description of what type they are. 
I saw these in the event photo section which I like. Can anyone tell me what are they called and if they are they available? cheers, CJ

They look like the cooper S flares. You can buy them brand new from Mini King. Thats where i got mine from.

The yellow car are Australian Mk2 Cooper S flares. You'll find them on all later upmarket minis such as the GT, mini S, LS, SS. As offered - see Mini King for these. IMO i wouldn't go for anything else - they don't look after market (but that's just me). The ones on the red car with black roof were there first flares made for the end of the Mk1s in Australian prompted by the SA regs that the best advice is that it was the first state to require BMC to comply with covering the edge of the tyres. Unconfirmed rumours around cite WA followed suit, and all of this forced BMC amongst other issues to create the Mk2s with flares. (Can someone advance this with some authority please?) Such a pity they dont have names eh. Maybe 1. Aussie based wide flares and Aussie based last produced flares by factory??? How about 2. the wide ones of the two are called the Mk1.5 flares aligned to the "so-called" Mk1.5? I cant help you on the after market types. Hope it helps |

My understanding is that there was only one style of factory flair for the Australian Mini range - the ones as shown on the yellow/white MK II S that came with metal backing strips (pop-rivetted when fitted in the field and spot-welded on the assembly line). These were first produced in August 1968 to satisfy the SA requirement but then became standard fitting on the MK II S in 1969. I think the ones shown on the red/black car are too wide to be factory items. |

I have numbers for 3 different sets of factory flares. Two different Cooper S types and also a factory accessory type. Then there is also the Clubman GT/Leyland Mini S type. All up there is 16 different part numbers.

thats why the ones on the red/black mini are called Mk2 Wide. They are aftermarket items, similar to a mk2 (like the factory items) but wider to accomodate wider wheels/track for a decent explaination of aftermarket flares, have a squizz at the post by Morris 1100 edit: speak of the devil, he just posted! |

For information, below is a page from the BMC Accessory catalogue showing the narrow flares, plus pages from the Special Tuning catalogue showing the wider flares - part C/HYL 7012 & 3. The Y in the part number means the part is of Australian origin.

There's some interesting and related knowledge here - http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=786632 Yes I did a bit of research into this as the wide type were on my car. You do seem to see the wide ones on a lot of SA and VIC cars where they were quite strict on this. My theory was that in a lot of cases the wide kit was used either because it left no doubt in legal coverage esp if 6in wheels were fitted, was more readily available, or as Wayne has suggested that very early on (Pre Mk2) it may have been the only type available. Also someone I spoke to from a dealership back in the day said of the wide set that "thats all you could get for a long time" suggesting the wide sets were easier to get than the standard for a time. Certainly not the case now days they are hard to get hold of a wide set, although they are on a surprising number of cars if you look closely. |

Yes, the ones on my car were the original thin black plastic type and were falling to bits after 40 years, I now have found a second old set copied in fibreglass. But even the fibreglass copies are getting hard to find, or at least most people are hanging on to them. |
