Post subject: | Welding a hole in the manifold |
My rover intake manifold has developed a small leak where the water from the cooling system enters to heat the fuel up. It appears to be leaking out of the blanking plate which is recessed. Is it possible to weld it up or would i have to get a new inlet manifold? If it is possible to weld up can anyone recommend someone that can do it? ![]() |

The blanking plate your referring to, I take it you can only see it from the direction of the arrow? Is it like a welsh plug or is it all cast alloy but recessed? If it's all alloy it should be able to be TIG welded. I had a gearbox casing that had cracked at the sump plug, took all of 20 mins for a local welder up the road from me to TIG it up in his home workshop. ![]() Cheers Shane |

It's a small steel welsh plug - about 1/2" diameter. If you can source another one somewhere, you may be able to get that one out and put a replacement in with a sealant. If not, then remove it and make an aluminium plug and tig weld that in there. Buying a replacement will give much better results - if done correctly. |
