G'day all - this is my first post since my roller coaster ride of purchasing a mini back in November. When I purchased the car I was quite happy with the way it drove and the car in general. About 200 ks later the engine seized. It had not been driven much in the previous 6 years (probably 2000 ks in total) So out it came and on tear down there were a heap of metal shavings found in the block and the oil galleries were found to be blocked. The machine guy said its a case of the engine not being cleaned before being assembled and these metal shavings in the crank bearings were the cause of it seizing. The engine was purchased from a well know shop in Sydney and I feel that I can't be too upset with the owner as I'm sure he wouldn't have known. It's all rebuilt now and is starving of fuel high in the rev range and cutting out. It seems to have much more power than it did before the rebuild. After seeing lots of minis with twin carbs, I am wondering is the carby too small? Specs are as follows: Cooper s block out to 1330 649 cam Lcb extractors Mini spares inlet manifold 1 3/4 su carb High compression As far as I know there is no work to the head at all Just after your opinions as to what carby I should be running or if the one I have is suitable and maybe just in need of a rebuild Thanks in advance |

I reckon the single 1 3/4" SU should be ok, you'll just need a different needle for it. One that's richer for the top end. When you say it's cutting out high in the rev range, what revs are we talking about? & are you sure it's not ignition cutting out? Cheers Shane |

When I say high probably around 4500 ( tacho not hooked up but engine not being pushed too high having just been rebuilt). Doesn't appear to be ignition - new distributor fitted and set up so seems ok. Being looked over at the moment but I was just wondering on the Darby size as so many have twins on them so thought maybe it was too small just having the one on there. Fingers crossed it works itself out today Thanks |

I had the same prob on my 1412 when I swapped the Russell Engineering manifold for a Minispares one due to lack of room. The MSC ones sold now just don't flow well enough at high rpm on big motors, with a big cam like yours. Their bigport one was better but is NLA now. I also had to swap the needle. An OA6 was fine on the RE manifold, but too lean with the MSC one. A KV was OK. |

Can some one recomend a reputable rolling road Dyno in his area? This would get his ign/fuel set up properly. |

Thanks for the advice guys - a wire directly from the coil to the dizzy fixed the problem temporarily anyway. Time to book it in with the auto electric guys. One of the downsides sometimes in buying someone else's restoration without knowing how qualified they might be to do the work. I also fail to see how I would need a wiring loom of 30 + wires running to the front of the car - previous owner may have thought it easier to add new wiring without removing the old. Thanks again for the advice - I think another carby may be in order further down the track once everything else is sorted |

I would suggest that Greig at Mini Classic is the guy to go to, but his dyno is still broken waiting for the only guy who can fix it to come and do so last time i dropped in. He recommended MCR where the ausmini dyno shootouts are held as the most Mini friendly dyno in Sydney. They are at 26/44 Carrington Rd, Castle Hill. cheers michael |
