Check the Celvis pin on the brake pedal.. Its the silver tube thing that connects the pedal to the master cylinder |

How much underlay did you put under the carpet? You may have stuck too much under the pedal and you now dont have enough pedal travel to make your brakes work well. |

Take your carpet back out and try the brakes. Thick carpet and underlay could be part of it, but only if the pedal is low to start with. Drums might need adjusting. |

Combine above with a worn celvis pin and elongated holes in pedal and master cylinder it gets even worse. |

There's nothing restricting the pedal. But basically the pedal is just all floppy and there is no tension in it so the car is pretty much un-driveable!!! Any ideas? |

Did you screw the carpet down by any chance? |

If the pedal is travelling so low that putting carpet + under-felt restricts the movement, you have an issue anyway. First thing to do after the clevis pin is adjust the drums, tighten all of them up until they just grab, and then back them off the tiniest bit. If that doesn't do athing, and there's no resistance at all, you'll need to bleed the brakes, which is easiest with a bleed kit, but two people can do it easily with a small tube, a jar and a spanner. If all that doesn't work, you have bigger issues and parts will need replacing. This could bean replacing the rubber tubes, damaged lines, wheel cylinders, master cylinder or bias/restricting valve. If you pump the pedal, does it firm up at all? If it does, this usually means you have air in the lines. Bleeding should fix it for now, but the air got in there somehow. |

if the pedal is floppy, my guess is you have bumped the clevis pin out at the top of the pedal.....or you have put a screw through one of the lines. or the brake issue is unrelated to the carpet and one of the wheel cylinders has a leak. |
