righto so my my dad has a 98 rover lately the srs light in the dash keeps coming on and staying on, any one know why ? or how to rectify this problem? |

Has there been anything under the seat recently? may have dislodged the seat belt pretensioner connector or maybe the "clock spring" behind the steering wheel airbag may have "failed" but the best way to find out it to get a diagnostic tool & get the fault code etc . . . |

It's not hard to go over the whole system, the SRS loom is bright yellow behind the dash and under the carpet. First thing to check is if the horn works, that'll tell you if the clockspring is knackered, but it probably won't be that. Next thing to check is the fuse for the SRS system, if it's not that then check the plugs by each door bin going to the seatbelt pretensioners looking for a loose connection, moisture, or any wires that are earthing. The computer is under the carpet under the back seat, and the earth connection for the SRS system is nearby. Check for loose connections. Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes (both terminals) before poking around the wiring. |

Something else I thought of (probably not the case) but airbags and pretensioners in modern cars have 'use by' dates. Generally speaking they should be replaced every 15 years, and the rover workshop manual makes a point of this. Don't suppose they put a timer in the SRS computer? 
EDIT: something else to consider - there's an internal battery in the computer. If these die from either age or removing the main battery long enough they give errors too. |

Could always crash it to check.. Did you disconnect and re connect an airbag connection with the battery connected, sometimes this can throw a permanent fault code into the system which can be rectified with a plug in of the computer |

Most cheaper code readers will not read ABS or SRS codes. I will take it in and get the code read, that will pinpoint which circut is the issue. In many cases it is the connection under the seat for the pretensioner or side airbag/trigger. Moving the seat backwards and forwards seems to cause issues. |
