It depends what is actually wrong with the carby. You could change it, but it might just need to service it.
Did the mechanic give you any more information on what is actually wrong??
Maybe take it to an experienced mini mechanic, they will be able to figure it out for you and give you your options to sort it out.

Get a new mechanic.

Sorry, a bit glib, but seriously if you're in the position of relying on somebody else to fix it, this guy obviously isn't the one for the job.

Firstly, how do you know it's flooding? WHY is it flooding? (if he's saying replace the carb he must have figured out what is wrong).

The comment about a cooper carb is just....well....ignorant.

It's probably just the float bowl sticking open or something simple.

This is an okay-ish summary of things to look at:

You can get genuine parts to fix any SU from SU Midel in Sydney. They are a simple carb to work on.

Cheers,

An 850's SU is practically the same as a Cooper's LH carb anyway!

As said use genuine parts- stay away from FuelMiser SU repair kits, as their main jet's hose is NOT rated for E10 or premium unleaded, they said.
It swells shut, as I found out.

Sounds like your mechanic isn't up to the task, or at least not the best for the task.

Where abouts are you located, someone will be able to point you in the direction of a good mechanic in your area

HS2 1 1/4", or HS4 1 1/2"
Pretty sure they came with the HS2, but the HS4 will do, just need the right manifold connection.
happy to be corrected.

850 manuals all had an HS2.
But...
If you have the HS4 (1-1/2") and manifold I'd keep it, UK 850 automatics used this, it's good for a couple more HP and more torque on an 850 (or 998 or 1098).
Just put a kit in it & get it jetted right..
