As per the title. I have been searching without luck for information about running a motor out of the car.

What sort of info are you after.

It's a pretty simple process. All you need is the complete motor and cooling system. Exhaust or at least the extractors and a battery.

If you want to be able to change gears, You can use a nice big pole on the clutch arm.

I remember mike_byron writing about starting an engine unsecured and without exhaust manifold on the floor of his colourbond garage - said it was like a gattling gun going off next to his ear!

walked around a bit too when he revved it.

I lot of the europeans in colder climate build cradles to run their engines out of the car over the winter to prevent damage from freezing etc - talking other marques, not just mini's.

I made up some legs to bolt to the engine mounts, just to rest on the floor and give it a wider footprint. Turns out it wasn't really needed as long as you don't go stupid revving it.

This photo of my Cooper S motor sitting on a bench while running.
The bench is on castors so I hung a safety chain from the rafters.

But! an important trade secret step Matt isnt saying is:

Fit Oil Pressure Gauge,
Remove plugs,
Connect battery and switch (or supersize screwdriver across the solenoid to earth)
Run for 30 seconds to see if Oil Pressure comes up

then
Fit plugs,
add some fuel
start the compression cycle etc by spinning the starter
vroom-vroom :D
