Post subject:  Appraisal please - second gear wear

Folks,
Very interested to hear opinions on the state of this gear.
The engaging teeth are quite a lot shorter than on the other three gears, which makes me think it's seen the best of its days.

The box was not shifting down well into second, and was tending to jump out of second soon after selection (but would settle down once the clutch pedal had been fully released and power applied gently). The selector fork was pretty ratty, so that was at least part of the problem.

Thank you.
Matt

That chunk out of the synchro hub is probably not helping, plus it doesn't look like the synchro ring has been engaging properly.
But I am sure the experts will have more to say?

Wear and tear on the teeth from worn synchros in the past not working.
That cone on the gear is pretty well rooted now too.
Time for a new one, bin the synchro sleeve while you're at it- it'll be buggered too.

Thanks guys.
Good to have it confirmed.
Is the correct part number for the syncro hub DAM7455?
Would the whole hub need replacing or just the inner or outer?
Looks like they only sell them as an inner/outer combined...
Are the newies okay, or would good 2/h be a better bet?

Cheers
Matt

These days, I would go for a good S/H one (outer + inner). You know where it was made and by whom.

Thanks Doc.
Will a rod change box be able to donate it's gear and hub? - if so, we've got two rod boxes as potential donors.
The Mini King bible seems to indicate that as long as it's 4 syncro (and pre-Aplus), the rod and remote stuff is the same.

Thanks!
Matt

Should be OK
I think 1,2 and 3 gears are the same on most 4 speed synchro boxes.

Yes any Oz 4 synchro box has same 1-2-3 gears and synchro hubs.
A+ hubs still the same I think, but their gears definitely are not.

When I say Australian gearboxes, I mean as fitted to Australian cars.
As in NOT A+ boxes (except for the very last cars in the late 70s).

Yes, many gearsets were made here (by Borg Warner) but these were made to the BMC drawings, so interchange with UK gears.
I think the gearbox cases all came from UK? Not sure though.

There are a few places in Oz still making gearbox parts (including some gears), Heritage MG is one of them.

Most replacement gears now come from UK but many are no longer made there.

4 synchro remote change boxes were superseded here and in UK by the rodchange box, around 1973-74. But the gears and shafts inside are the same parts, except for reverse. Again, I'm not talking A+ gearboxes here.
