Hi everyone thought I would post some pics of the molasses rust removal trial. I thought that I would give it a go on a rusty old cam I had hanging around see the images below.

Sitting in the bucket of 1 part molasses 9 parts water


After 2 days in the bucket I was really surprised, a quick hose off with water and a light rub with a wire brush




I have put it back to soak for 2 more days and see what happens. I will post some more progress pictures after I pull it out.

Where can I get some molasis? I have a lot of surface rust in a fuel tank I need to get rid of.

Just for interest sake do You Know if this cam came out of a Cooper engine

Harley you can get from any stock feeds supplies or I got it from city farmers 5L was $17.

From my understanding you need to treat to metal with something after treating it in the molasses mix to stop it starting to rust again. So may be not the best thing to use in the fuel tank, have a search on google and see what it says.

Nice experiment , wonder what chemical reaction its doing as i would assume molasses isnt acidic ? so very cool idea.

Anyone else got any unusual rust removal formulas ?

Success is so much sweeter after the struggle

I used molasses to derust a water jacket in an 1100S motor that had stood for years full of rusty water with a pump and head on it..

I bolted a head to it and stood it on end, water pump hole at the top.
I used a 1 part molasses/3 parts water mix.

Filled to the brim and left it a week, now and then I stuck a pushrod in there and stirred it up a bit.
After 1 week I poured it out, hosed it, repeat.
Same again at 2 week point.
After 3 weeks when I drained it then stuck the karcher blaster in it, it was pretty much spotless inside.

The sugar enzymes eat the rust is the simplest explanation, google molasses rust removal there is lots of info.

If you want to de rust a part quicker I've had great success with electrolysis. Do a search. I only needed to leave rusty bits in that for 6 hours or so to get a similar result to that shown in the photos.

It is very nice to pull a rusty piece of metal out of a bucket and most of the work is done for you!

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

If you want a supplier in Melbourne try the stock feed place near Flemington Racecourse. $18 for a huge drum of the stuff. Looks good enough to eat but my wife doesn't think so.

And DON'T PUT ALLOY COMPONENTS IN IT AS IT WILL EAT INTO THEM!!

Yes pretty well all agriculture supply depots have it. Very cheep.
I have a spoonfull everyday and have had so, for the the ten years.
When I was a little kiddy my mum use to make us have a spoon of it before we went to school.

That's why us baby boomers are all still healthy and strong today (*cough, cough*). My mum liked giving us cod liver oil too.
Back then, nobody cooked with olive oil- you got it from the chemist, for ear aches and wax in yer lugholes. Of course this all changed when the Italians and Greeks arrived.
