| Post subject: | Clutch release (throw-out) bearing - old type |
Does anybody know if it's possible to purchase the early type of clutch release bearing that had a flat thrust face that mated up with the clutch contact plate. My regular suppliers just carry the bearing that contacts around the circumference of the outer bearing shell and I find that these don't last very long when used with a competition pressure plate.

Some of the race guys swap their old plates in when they buy a new diaphragm, or put the new spring into their old diaphragm cover. |

Yes I found out the new ones start to wear a groove in the surface of the mating plate yeah, I had that too - I surface ground the plate a couple of times over the life of a couple of the standard bearings, then replaced it with the flat faced type and it's perfect they'll also survive running off-centre if your wok is worn through the hole making the thrust carrier crooked when you push on the clutch pedal. Standard ones don't like that... like Curly said, if you need a clutch that can handle more than standard torque levels, the crappy thrust bearings available now can't handle it |

The original flat faced bearing was used with the coil spring clutches eg 850, 997 Cooper and 1071S. Then they brought out the `new' (POS) one when they introduced diaphragm spring clutches. Why did they `fix' it, when it wasn't broke...
Old (good) flat one is obsolete because it was `replaced' 50 years ago. |
