Post subject:  Headlight Questions
Hey Guys,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but was is the difference between these two sets of head lights?

Mini 7" Halogen headlight upgrade kit - suit clubman (PAIR)

And are they both just direct replacements for the sealed headlights in my clubby at the moment? can i just take out the current ones and plug these in?

They both are essentially the same thing, the only difference is that one is made in China and the other one is made in India (guess which is which).

The only difference would be the lense quality and bulb quality.

I have the Made in India one and have Philips X-Treme Vision bulbs in them and have no complaints whatsoever... But hey if you have $120 to bloe, by all means get the Made in China ones...

Forgot to mention, I am not sure about Clubmans (or at least your specific model) but roundnoses did not come with any sort of headlamp relay. If you are going to move over from sealed beam to H4 then wiring in a headlamp relay is essential.

I am also planning on doing this upgrade. I was planning on going with the $55 one and putting good globes in them. I would recommend running these through a relay circuit though, just using your orginal switch for switching the relay. The lights will have a better power supply and it will give your old switch a longer life too.

this one was just at the top of the list on an ebay search, it's for 4 head lights but there are ones for two as well.

I have these in Slidey because I wanted curved glass.

I put uprated Phillips bulbs in them too. Seem to be a great combination and much better than the sealed beams.

I have the Wipac Quadoptic kit from Minispares UK, they've been working fine for years.
That was cheaper then than buying here, I'm not so sure now with ripoff UPS airfreight prices from UK.

The main Diff is one has flat Lense and the other has curved lens

While I strongly agree that they are desirable, relays aren't essential. Sealed beam lights were usually 75/50W in later Minis so the wiring is capable of dealing with that. If you fit 60/55W H4 halogen globes, you will still gain the benefit of more and whiter light but your wiring will be less stressed on high beam and still well within capabilities on low beam.

There are a number of other advantages to relays, including reducing voltage drop, and I fit them to my cars, but they don't have to be used if you use restraint with the bulbs you fit.

I fitted the cheaper kit to my clubby and had them running on high beam, unknowingly as I was adjusting the switch to make sure i had the right pins connected, and after a while on high-beam, the switch was very warm. Standard driving, it's probably okay though.

Post subject:  Headlights and relays.
Fitting headlight relays to a Mini without changing the sealed beams to H4 also makes a significant improvement. The biggest Aim is to improve the Voltage that actually arrives at the bulb itself making the light intensity brighter. Doing this also improved the life span of all switches involved. It is not rocket science. Today it is a common standard fitting on all cars produced. I have never heard any one complain after fitting headlight relays. It is also quite simple to do.

Yes that will work fine, using 65w headlights you are only using around 6 amps per bulb. you may just have to use a 12v source under bonnet rather then going straight to the battery you just need a bigger enough cable in the engine bay. or you can extend the lead to the battery,
